Legionnaire Helmets

by Two-Tonic Knight (Minifig MOC's)
These are extremely heavily modified Kettle Hats from the KK1 version of the Royal Knights. Except for the gel super glue and Rub'N Buff, it is all LEGO. Yes, the shields are just temporary place holders. I may leave the as Lorica Squamata, but then again I might change them over to Lorica Segmentata via stickers. The blue legionnaire is holding a pompeii-style gladius, and the red legionnaire is holding a fulham-style gladius. Excellent helms there two tonic, well done with the modding
How long did they take you to do?
I think you should really make some decals for their torsos and they definatley need to lose those dumb kk sheilds
Keep up the good work!!

Wow TTK, those do look nice with the rub 'n buff on them.... are you by chance going to try a bronze one in the future?  Also, the swords are nicely reformed, I shall have to get mine into better shape, they were rushed a bit too much.

The first I didn't really keep track of the time. The second one (which is a much better indicator) took somewhere between 2 to 2.5 hours to completed state. Reducing everything to a rough state takes only 20-25 minutes - most of the time is in cleaning everything up and smoothing it out. As noted, the shields will get decals (I do not need to lose the shields, only the prints). The torsos are quite historical as they stand, though to match the helmets and make them legionnaires rather than auxillaries, the lorica segmentata would be more appropriate. Bronze: Probably not this version. The earlier design that doesn't requie moving the back brim is probably what I'll make brass/bronze.

by Recluce on Fri, 09/16/2005 - 14:06
Ahh, ok, so the Coolus style in bronze, and used on your auxilliaries, the cheaper older equipment usually going to them anyway, and the good imperial styles to the legionnaires?

Oh you beat me to it, I was going to make a Legionnaire figure too. Oh well, I bow to you and your customization talents TTK. Those helms are perfect as is but it would be cool to see one of them with a red crest.

I love them, I think the blue one (which appears to me to have a smaller back section) looks better than the red but that's just my opinion.

I believe they are.... TwoTonic snipped down the blades and filed down the guards a bit, then smoothed it all with fine sand paper.
I love them, I think the blue one (which appears to me to have a smaller back section) looks better than the red but that's just my opinion.
Well noted. Yes, I made one slightly different from the other just to see how they looked. The real helmets had a fair amount of variation, most likely depending on both time and individual armorer. I prefer the wider one, but what I can get away with depends in part on how finely I can saw the brim close to the helmet when removing it. The Swords: Just whittled away at a standard LEGO Castle sword until it looked right. Pretty much the same as the Greek Xiphos and Kopis I made (or are those examples now gone on this forum in the changeover?).

And just for conpletions sake, here is the final fig: The explanations for the stickers is posted on Classic-Castle, but since this thread is supposed to be about the helmet, I just let the final picture speak for itself.

Very nice TTK, you've totally outdone yourself.  I now have a lot of work to try to come up with something else to TRY to compete with.

Excellent work, once again!

I'm not too familiar with Legionaire armour, but the back of the helm reminds me of the hot-oil neck guard seen in the LOTR movie (used by the baddies during the fight at Helms Deep). Nice!

It's one of those odd things:

I arrived at the Moose Lodge in Beautiful Burbank for SoCal Games Day, only to find that the building had been double-booked.  Some of us could jam in upstairs and play games until the lower level cleared out around one.  As I walked through, I noted the other group were plastic model builders.   So I looked around, and there was an Alumilite Super Casting Kit.  Well, having packed that away for a time that I wanted to actually track down where I could buy one, I could see my opportunity arrived.  A very nice gentleman told me where I could buy it locally (Pegasus Hobbies in Montclair).  I also picked up some "green stuff" and Magic Sculpt for sculpting.  So this is now moved off the back burner to the front again.

So the first stage is to get a castable helmet.  The problem I foresee with the current design are the cheek guards.   They are narrow at the top than the bottom (look at the second photo from the top, blue figure - that gives the best view of the problem), which would seem to be a problem since  the final piece would have to flex (and eventually break) the mold as it was extracted.  The second is the forward jawline projection.  One could possibly rotate the helmet as you extracted it, but this would force an effective wider part though the already narrow top.  Doable as is (i.e. sttrip off the paint and cast), or make a streamlined version?  The easiest part would be to make the backside of the cheek guards straight, and then file them into the final shape after casting.  The harder part would be to remove the lower projection.  More work to restore by cutting away material above it, and would less like the real thing if left off entirely.  Suggestions from those that have been there already?

Oh man, and what happened to my avatar....?

Spectacular work, Two-tonic.  Hopefully the casting issues will work themselves out, and this excellent piece will become available.
