need help with making helmets

i see this gray stuff on recluces helmets before being molded.  http://www.maj.com/cgi-bin/gallery.cgi?i=836039 what is this? is it in a form of clay? because it seems good and looks great with helmets

After opening about 8 threads I finally found the one I was looking for: "Sneek Peek of things to come..." by Recluce. According to some of the conversation between her and Baby Jawa the grey stuff is an epoxy putty (or something similar- modeling compound).
