Cracking Mini-figs?

by Mario Man (Brick Talk)
I have some issues with mini-figs cracking... normally along the side of the torso, or up the arm starting at the hand socket. I have taken apart the mini-figs I dont need right now, and organized the pieces into a plastic compartment box, but as I have a *modest* collection right now, everything is very precious to me. I have gotten replacements for some if they get really bad, but I'd rather not do that. Is this just a part of LEGO? Is there some trick to storing figs?

I have some old Jonny Thunders and Knights that are about eight years old and haven't cracked once. This is after I played with them at a younger age extinsevly, then gave them to my little brothers to play with, and they they were dumped in two boxes with the rest of the legos and carted across the country two or three times. Droped, bighten, squeezed, drowned and they've yet to crack. How old are the pieces you're useing?

Most are younger then that! Most of my collection I'd say is only about 5 years old roughly, maybe some older ones sprinkled in there. Now One of my viking figs developed a crack. Not even 5 months old.

I cant believe I am the only one thats having this problem...

Your not the only one I've bought three replacement Zam Wessal's over the last three years as her arms seem to be constantly cracking in two!

this has happened to some of my clones. it seems temperature is a key role. are you in a hot place?

No, not at all. The house temp is kept at around 75 daytime hours, and 70 at night.

Trust me it's never hot in the UK anymore lol :D

It happens. Usually from removing and replacing minifig arms. The pressure just causes the plastic to crack on occasion. It can even come to you like this directly from LEGO. There are other factors, such as rough handling, or just a torso getting jostled the wrong way. Remember, LEGO torsos are made of stiff, but very thin plastic. That means they -are- somewhat brittle. Cracked torsos is just a part of that. If it's happening to you a LOT, I would wonder what exactly you're -doing- to your LEGOs, since I've probably only had a few dozen cracked torsos in my 20 years of collecting and playing with LEGO.

Well, I *never* remove arms, just hands, but I also remove legs sometimes... And trust me, I'm notorious for being... (ahem) protective with my minifigs. As I said, I just have them all taken apart and sitting in a box, should I keep them together? Perhaps could I try sanding the leg joints a bit so they aren't so tight?

yea, over time, my minifigs develope cracks in them. Heck, my sig fig already has a crack in it's brand new arm, and i just made the thing last week.

legolas_v_strange I have that problem with newer bodys mostly only a few old (after 2003) ever crack. Like Damian noted use and taking off arms and hands does kill them.

I have noticed that brand name Legos (i.e. Star Wars,Spongebob,Spider-man,And countless others) crack more easy. seems they are making them in China and(no offence) some Chinesse factorys are using weaker plastic for making parts .Like just over the summer i bought some Castle sets and they didn't break i got a B-Wing for my birthday in May and 2 days later one of my figs had a crack in the arm and body. When i closely examend the boxes I noticed that my Castle sets were made in Denmark(the home of the Lego company) and my B -Wing was made in China. But to back up i also bought a Mars Mission set and just 3 weeks ago there was a crack in the torso.
I'll look more into this-Prince P.I

Did realize people were still posting here...

Meh, pity that they have to start using cheap labor in China. I just looked at my 'kings castle seige' box, and holy cow, alot of countries helped make it. =S

Well I have noticed some of my newer figures and regular bricks had cracks. Call it luck of the draw. Some are tough as steel and others brittle as potato chip. I have nine clone scout walker and of those one has 4 cracked bricks. Note, I don’t "play" with mine either.

What WORKS for me is plastic weld. You can buy it at Hobby Bench or other model selling stores. I lightly pull the affected part open, apply the plastic weld, hold the part tightly closed for 30 seconds, and done. I have had much success with this..... one draw back the plastic weld melts the plastic together so too much will leave your part with a "scar" so a little is a lot.

Hope this helps. Together we'll find a cure.
