Tip, tricks, advice, anything appreciated in helping to create my first minifig

by John Aynge (Tips, Techniques & Questions)

I'm going to attempt to create this little gem:

http://www.enworld.org/Pozas/Pictures/Exile/daredevil_pilot.jpg

I've purchased: Bomber jacket (male, but I don't know that accenuating the chest is a big deal on this fig).

-Is there a female bomber jacket?

For the Jet Pack I'm using a S.C.U.B.A. tank or air tank. Not quite right, but some putty and minor sculpting might make it work quite well.

-Has anyone ever made a rocket pack or something similar? If so what advice do you have in making one?

Helmet. This one was tough. I've ordered a strange metallic helmet that looks a little similar, but I've also ordered a knights helmet. I'll take some putty to give the helmet that swept back bicycle rider kind of a look.

-Any ideas for making this look good would be welcome.

The hands I'll spray prime and air brush or spray black to give the look of the gloves.

Somebody at Gen Con had a Tommy Gun and I'll use that.

-The gun is all black. Do you think it visually improves the figure to add the colors of brown and gun silver to the weapons? Does the addition make it POP, or does it call out the fact that everything else doesn't share the same shades of color?

It's not seen in that pic, but I've also picked up aviator googles, and an aviators hat. I thought that might make a cool little accessory.

What is the best way to make the minifig fly? Does Lego or anyone make a Flight Stand or is it easy to just create a Fight Stand? The head seems to be the hardest part?

-Does Lego make a femal head with an eye patch?

I'd like to have a little bit of hair on it as well. I've bought a female head with a little bit of brown that is fairly close to the figure, but the color is brown. How hard is it to cover the brown hair with a coat of red? My thought is to take brush on primer and cover the brown hair with it, and then repaint it with a coat of red.

-This might be an option where I go looking for a decal or request one.

I'd eventualy like to build up to a Flying battle scene with this figure and some Nazi Rocketmen.

Thanks for any tips or ideas that you might share in advance.

Hi John,

The Bomber Jacket, male, sounds like a good choice (the only other choice would be to create a decal like the picture). No female Bomber Jacket to my recollection.

Jetpack: SCUBA Tank with the air hose removed should look good- I don't remember what the Rocketeer's pack looked like and even though her pack looks wide (so that you can use the double tank pack- from claasic space et al possibly)

Hands: why paint? Just use some black hands for the gloves- besides, with regular paints I never had much luck, they eventually flake off. And then there's vinyl dye...

I'd leave the black (even though the brown highlights would look more authentic)

Flight stand: if its just for a pic or if you're you're doing a diarama of sorts you can try hanging the fig with some form of thread. Or, if there won't be anything above the fig look into some of the clear lego pieces (sim9ilar to the Star Wars STAPs/Battledroids)

I'm not aware of any female heads with patches.

The hair: Primer then red and finally a sealant should work but keep it as thin as you can so the hairpiece/helmet can be put on. If its on the head though it  migh be a bit difficult (shaky hands, large brushes...) For the hair itself this should work fine but I would've just used a red hairpiece.

For decals/decal requests go here; don't forget to use "DECAL REQUEST:" in the title.

Hope something of this helped.

-Alan

That helps out a lot. I Don't think I ordered the double tanks, but I'm hoping I did.

Black hands would be great. The only reason I'm talking about painting the hands is because I've already ordered the torso, and I'm not sure I ordered black hands...oops.

I'm hoping the pieces show up tomorrow on my day off.  I'm very excited to get started. I've painted miniatures for Wargames and D&D for years, and I can hold my own in that area, but this is a whole new thing. I'm not sure it will be "my thing" or not, but it seems like fun so far.

Thanks for the tips. I appreciate man.

The Edit feature and non double posting is great...if the edit makes the thread pop up as NEW.

Okay, so this morning I get the pieces in. I'm a little bummed because the shipper did me the favor of putting together the major components. Made sense, but I was a little bummed I didn't get to put it together myself. Very  minor and infantile quibble really.

So, the aviator glasses do not just pop on a minifigs head. Didn't know that. Do i have to have the aviator hat to go with it? If I do will the aviator glasses go on the aviator hat?

Also, the helmet I picked up (a castle helmet) doesn't stick to the minifigs head. It has not peg or anything so I'm not sure how it would go on any minifig. Do the castle minifigs have bigger heads?

So, the figure is already put together, cool, and the other pieces won't stay on, and it seems I forgot to order the aviator hats...bummer. However, the tommy gun looks good and fits very tightly.

The Vallejo paint on white primer is sticking, and I'll give it a whirl in a little while. I didn't even clean the fig, as I was a little scatter brained, and didn't do my usual mini paint prep rituals. I guess I'll have to treat legos like any other mini paint situation.

I did order the DOUBLE tanks. So, that is one that worked PERFECT for me! Very excited about that.

So, drilling helmet that doesn't fit minifigs head, drilling minifigs head, placine in earth magnets, and I'm pretty sure that my NON FIT problem is about to go away!

Then I'll prime the helmet and the hands with spray on black.

Paint helmet in several shades of silver metallic.Non metallic metallic is pretty, but it's not my bag.

Paint the hands black (until I buy some extra black hands)

Work on converting the tanks into a little more rocket looking kind of a thing. I might also add detachable flames coming out of the bottome of the rockets. I'm use to working with sculpey or 50/50 chemicals that form a white plasticy material. This milliwhatever is a new one on me. I'll pick up a little today, and give it a shot.

Any more advice would be greatly appreciated.

I'd suggest a custom torso decal :-)

as for a backpack, I made one.. http://www.maj.com/cgi-bin/gallery.cgi?i=768822 while I was happy with the helmet, it needs work (still) with steadier lines and such, and as for the back pack I intend to redo it.

I'm not much help here I guess. :-D

What is the back pack made out of (piece wise)?

"So, drilling helmet that doesn't fit minifigs head, drilling minifigs head, placine in earth magnets, and I'm pretty sure that my NON FIT problem is about to go away!"

Before you do that, you might want to make sure you bought a helmet, not a visor.  If these are the aviator goggles you're talking about, then yes, you will need some sort of helmet to attach them to, like the actual aviator cap. Hope that helped, don't forget to post the finished fig when you're done!
