Armothe's Chrome!

by Damien (Minifig MOC's)

Armothe hasn't posted this stuff himself yet - I don't know why, but you guys need to check it out:

This is amazingly cool. I'd love to know how he chromed all those pieces and how durable they are (does it flake off, etc). Hopefully he'll stop in and let us know what his secret is. Great work, Armothe!

I've seen some of these before, they're amazing! It's also great to see that he's uploading his works to Brickshelf.

Hey guys, thanks for taking notice! Those are really just the tip of the iceberg as far as what I have finished. I have access to a chroming process that is fairly cheap and sturdy. No flaking! I think Vladek is my favorite and plan to bring several of these guys to BrickWorld 2007 to act as minifig filler for the displays. RedBean and myself plan to continue chroming both BrickForge and official LEGO parts - I'll have to post details on our website sometime.

As much as I love Brickshelf as a resource, everytime you edit a directory it takes it offline - sometimes as much as up to 3 weeks to bring it back online. If anyone has a better idea for a LEGO-sponsored hosted gallery, let me know.

Those are amazing!  Armothe, how did you do that??

-edited after Damien's post-
I meant that I wanted to know what the chroming process was.

Hmmm... wonder what he means by chroming process. Those look awesome. A mandalorian helmet is a must...

Hmmm... wonder what he means by chroming process.

He probably means "it's a secret." Haha.

So, Armothe - I did notice that some of the weapons you have chromed do not have chrome on their handles. Is this just because you prefer the way that looks, or because the chrome surface will scratch or flake off if rubbed too vigorously?

Well, no matter what chroming process you use you have to have some area where it's secured. Luckily, for headgear you can just mount it on a 1x1 round brick because the inside does not need do be chromed. As far as weapons go, all the surface area is exposed, so you have to sorta pick and choose where you want to mount it to a clip. I did my best to pick an area where the minifig hand would cover up the bare spot. In some cases I taped off the entire handle and just left the plastic underneath exposed.

I may or may not take custom orders. The resource I use requires a pretty large minimum order and I'm not sure I want to broker deals with dozens of people who want 5-10 parts chromed - it gets very difficult to keep track. Rather, you can post some of the items you'd like to see chromed here (or on our website when we get forums running), and on our next order I'll do my best to include them. The goal is sell both official and unofficial items in chrome on our website in the not-to-distant future. I will have quite a few for sale at BrickWorld for those who are attending.

Outstanding Armothe!
If that is just the tip of the iceberg I would definately "go in icewater" to find out the rest!

Sorry I haven't had a chance to comment on this yet (work-related nonsense) but truly beautiful work.  There's more a than a few LEGO and Brickforge items I've love to have chrome versions of.  Too bad they won't be out in time for the "Movie Contest" otherwise a "Boorman-esque" Arthur would have been in order!

Ah, these are beautiful Armothe!  I saw awhile ago on a thread on C-C you mentioned that you'd be selling the Brickforge items en masse as chromed.  Was that scrapped, or by "requests" did you mean other types of items to chrome for sale?  Sorry for the confusion either way.

Now I could be a wiseguy and say that I'd like to see the great sword chromed, but I'll refrain myself.  All I want are the pointed visor, euro armor, katana blade, samurai helm, and great helm would be the new SW blaster (the small kind, the big ones are just frustrating in that they can't be positioned right without being cut), and please consider selling chromed minifigs and/or minifig parts?

Come to think of it, a chrome gem piece would look really sweet too, even if it doesn't make much sense.  Definitely a treasure chest...but I think that's probably getting out of your target range, isn't it?

Whatever you do, I'm sure I'll buy (and more than 5-10 pieces depending on the price), so please go through with this project :)  Also, there aren't any plans for any sort of scabbard or articulated arms, are there?  Just checking

Sigh...re-reading this post I look like a young fanboy, when in reality I'm just a very, very tired one.  Anyway I look forward to more of your products, sorry for rambling.

Little Armory already has a scabbard (though currently unavailable). And the articulated arms were also going to be Little Armory, though whether they'll ever go into production or not is unclear.

Well, I haven't heard much from LA, besides what Sith35 e-mailed me about awhile back about new products...but their relative lack of activity sorta led me to believe that they were done.  As for the scabbard, more than one person can make then, but I admit I guess I got LA and Armothe confused with the articulated arms.  It's a shame those things never went into production, they were amazing.
