this site needs...

by Droid (Site Feedback)
This site needs to some publicity. It's very quiet. It could be days before someone actually posts.  We need a way to get more people here. I'm sure there's good customizers out there who don't know about this site. Since I am a brickfilmer, I could make an ad for this place. I just want to know, do think it would be okay, and should I? I don't want to upset the community. I'd like to see more customizers.

This is obviously just "IMO", as they say, but I rather like it like this. Classic-Castle is my "busy site", I like MCN as my "quiet" one.
But hey, that's just me.

When I first joined, this was a very busy site. It was a site about learning, and teaching people about this hobby. This past year, more, and more users have joined. Few have been quality members. Uncountable times do people ask the same questions about avatars, or about how to resize images. Really dumb things that are specifically outlined in the terms of service. Almost a year ago, Damien, our resident Moderator CLEARLY outlined our Quality Content Policies. This helped for several months, but it's been long forgotten, and not even read by new members. Same goes for the Actual Terms of Service! New members are incessantly chastised by members for NOT following the rules, and they deserve it! It's their responsiblity to live by OUR rules if they want to be a part of OUR community. I know how annoying it can be when someone just replies in a topic to use the search function, but really! Use some common sense. A couple months ago, we updated the search tool to try and fix this problem. Has it worked? Not a chance. I use it all the time to find old topics to post in, rather than make a new topic. There's really nothing worse than having some ten year old kid whining about how to paint something, when dozens of topics have already been answered by our patient and loyal members. I don't care if you are new. If you want to learn about customization, explore the site! There are thousands of creations, ideas, techniques, etc. that are amazing to look over. As the 'newbies' have been noticing, some of our oldies have been leaving. It's true that some have simply fallen into their 'Dark Age', but many, including me, are just a little peeved about how the members here on MCN are acting. I have chosen to stay, because I love the community, and it's made a huge impact on me. I really want the site to return to it's former glory, but for that to happen, that takes the support of everyone here. EVERYONE. This is a rant, and it's been waiting to come out. I'll leave you with these links to read over.

I agree with Droid.  We need more members here.  It is kinda annoying though when new members post all these useless threads and violate the quality content.

Wow. Way to go Vid, I think you beat Victor in largest block of text! ; )

Now then, time for my rambling:

This site needs to some publicity. It's very quiet.
Right now, there are 33 people on this site, and we have nearly 3000 members, not saying they are all active, but still, those were(are) all people who knew(know) about MCN and joined up, seems like enough people know about the site, and I certainly wouldn't want this place 'busy', the MCN staff does enough work as it is keeping up with moderating the forums and running the site, if it suddenly got populated with a bunch of new members that would be bad, in my opinion.

It could be days before someone actually posts.

Not true. I can't recall a time where it has been days before anyone has posted, I can't even recall a single day where there were no posts to the forum. Sure, it may take a couple of days for somebody to post in a topic of yours, but I don't think that has anything to do with publicity problems, for there can be other threads posted at the same time as that one and get two pages of comments, it's all up to the people visiting the forums to post where they want to. You can't really expect tons of comments in a decal thread these days, because the site's overrun with them.

That's a good thing!
This is obviously just "IMO", as they say, but I rather like it like this.
I do too actually, I can't come on here every day now, and it's nice when I miss a couple days and can easily catch up on what I've missed. This can be a task at some other forums, but here it's just nice.

I'll leave you with these links to read over...
Thanks, I hope this gets a few members (Especially the newer ones.) to look this stuff over.

Yep we all feel the same way Vid. And btw if I hadn't misplaced my UAAA you would be getting one! Just for that large UA like block of text.

More members equals more problems, for other members and of course the staff.

Right now we have alot of members, in Summer this place seems to get more busy as Mums and Dads and Kids are off for holidays. The new contest was not to try and attract more members, but was to try and get our current members to start customizing again. As thats what we have a lack of right now. So get Customizing!

Man I swear I just saw a ghost ;)

I was going to say here here to Vidgamer's impressive post, but then I realised there were mountains before it, so it didn't really fit but that won't stop me agreeing with him. To me some aspects have gotten better, by some miracle a lot of ignorance has stopped, as I remember getting very annoyed at new members aying things like "God save this minfig" and things like that to people's work. Personally I blame the Counter Strike obssesed twelve year olds, the tenners get it too hard :D.Also I doubt any of you have heard of facepunch forums, but it is one of those massivly popular forums sadly with a noob infestation (I'm using this term as I am relating to the well known "OMG H4X!" type) so they just keep constant  bans (we know as suspensions) for bad spelling, grammar and criticism. I always thought this was a stupid idea but after thinking of this forum going to the dogs I think it could need it sometimes. I was going to PM Damian about the Code of Conduct but I never got round to it, but seeing as this thread has come up I think we should have a public vote, and I'm afraid I think that we'd have to be a bit predjadice and only let the members who have contributed to this forum for a while vote, or at least have behaved in their time here. Also I don't want to name names here but the new people seem to think they can just boss around the other members, like saying things like "Post all your decals here", and "I need a *enter decal name* made for tommorow, I don't want MS paint rubbish from anyone and I can't find any reference so you'll have to do that part". Personnaly I think MCN is being taken out of it's league from small time corner shop to being a big city call centre, we need some drastic measures me thinks.

No vote is necessary, we seem to be in agreement with each other. First, I have to say thanks for not turning this thread in to a whine-fest. The thought-out opinions expressed here are appreciated by the staff and we do take heed. Obviously, there is little that can be done if one is so inclined to sign-up to only post self aggrandizing nonsense and other useless threads. We do take care of a majority of that before it becomes a problem. Whether you're an Admin, Mod or just a member of this hobby we all find these persistent annoyances taxing. Changes are being made, and again we appreciate our more astute members and encourage you keep your posts, and customs, of good quality.

~MCN Moderator of the Minifig MOCs Forum~
by Damien on Tue, 06/19/2007 - 19:13

And to point a fact, you guys don't get a vote anyway. :)

But seriously. . like Phar said, we're in agreement here. The Mods and Admins do keep a close eye on the forum happenings (closer than I bet any of you are aware of. . muahahaha), and we're pretty quick to see problematic members. Those ones are generally weeded out pretty quick. But also keep in mind that we cannot preemptively ban people. That isn't fair. They have to be given an opportunity to be active on the site before we can honestly determine whether they are good members or not.

We hope the lot of you won't be too put off by the sometimes taxing behaviour of certain members, and will continue to post. It's you guys that keep this place alive, and its you guys that will be here when the weaker links break and fall away. So as Phar said - keep up the posts, customs, and quality. We'll take care of the rest.

And if you find a grievance you may have with another member, tell us. We can't be aware of everything all at once. If you catch something we don't, we certainly want to know about it and you can PM any one of us at any time.

Instead of making ads, maybe you should  pm certain members at  Brickfilms who seem to have a certain interest in customizing or use customs in their films and tell them about this site.  Since you have 1500 posts, you would probably know which are quality members.  (Just a suggestion.)

I know that I don't post much and this thread is an example of  why.(although not the worst)  What started as a conversation about advertising, and improving the sight, quickly turned into a discussion about the size and quality of the members.  A valid topic of conversation but not the one that was started.  This seems to be common, people breaking topic and commenting on comments. You will find examples of both above(just to clear the air, I know that I currently am doing the same.)  As to the improvement of the sight, advertising is always a good idea.  I found and joined the sight by accident,  but I had hoped when I joined that I would get constructive critism from people, who are better at this then I am.  but it turns out that it seems to be about complimenting friends and frequent posters.  Since I don't  have time to be on all the time I haven't made many comments or friends, and if you are unlucky enough to post before someone that posts all the time, you'll be lucky to have any comment at all.  The problem( for lack of a better word,) is that the MOC forum, needs to be broken into sections or catagories.  I also believe we would all benefit from some type of a "classroom or critique forum" seperate from the "oooh ahhh" gallery, where people don't want anything but compliments.  Perhaps such a "classroom" could take place on a specific day and time, and have limited "teachers" you could limit entries, and spend time in a live chat about the work, and things that stem from it.  I know that all the moderators don't get paid enough. they selflessly work so we all can share in each others efforts.  For this reason alone we should up the level of conversation and by doing so we will up the level of everyones work. I have more details about my ideas, and would love to help in any way that I can.

What ever Vidgamer838 said is all truth, He should publish the rules and a book next time. I really feel bad for all the mods doing all the hard work like super heros, only having the villains mess everything up again.

I know this isn't my decision and that I should not be saying any of this because I have no authority whatsoever in MCN but I am only a member that bothers DD eternally with his HOW-TO'S , but IMO Vidgamer838 should be part of the staff.

IMO he would be a great helper. He has been saying the right thing, hes been here for about a year and a half now. He has the exp.

And Yes, the new members a.k.a. nm's can get very, very out of hand. Not to mention they have been for the last few months starting around June.

They should read the rules. I know this is off topic and will only give the Great Ramus more work but, We should have the nm's be allowed a start of 2 posts; (I forgot which website forum does this.) Just to see if they have read the rules and well after they got 2 good posts, they shall I say, graduate and be allowed more freedom.

I also agree with what babyjawa said about why he left. When I joined he left and that was when the infestation of unworthy forum posts came to MCN. I'm pretty sure that the nm's here are only 12 or younger and could care less. I myself and 14 and will be 15 October 2nd (same day as Mahatma Gandhi) and do not lie about my age when registering for a website.

Just like Damien said we must be fair and cannot keep banning people, which is why I suggested the 2 forum graduation system as i call it.

Even though i haven't done anything good for the community, I love it. I stay because of our wonderful staff who work hard and have always stayed and never left us to do this alone. I thank you, and you are half the reason why I stay, the other half is because i want to customize. Which i havent got around to doing because i dont have money or know how to draw for concept art.

Sorry that was especially long.

True VG838 is rather exemplary, but we have many good guys here that I could mention of the top of my head. Including you Gandhi. In fact many others can be found in this thread here, all alluding to the same frustrations. The two worthy posts idea might work for some forums, but we want to be careful not to turn some on off from joining worried they might get the boot for one bad posting.

BTW, happy early birthday Gandhi.

2 posts? It's an interesting idea, but maybe a test would be... better. ; ) With possibly 5 questions relating to the Rules and Guidelines. That you had to have actually read it to know the answers. :) 3 out of 5 you barely pass, 4 out of 5 you did better, and 5 out of 5 you achieve!

I don't think it would work though. Both of those would probably scare off new members looking to join.

Overall, we need to do something, but the question is... What? Whatever the staff does, there will be positives and negatives.

Well Actually as it says in my sig, well what do you think!

But anyways what i mean is not to boot kind of thing lets say, I mean You know in highschool a certain # of credits is required to graduate right?

Well we can use it for the forum system.

But ok i didnt explain the 2 forum graduation system correctly. Alright as a nm you are allowed to post but not make a new forum thread, after they post 2 good posts, they are allowed to make a new forum thread. Get my idea?

I don;t think it would scare off the new members from coming, but it will scare the 12 year olds that lied about their age.

I don't really think it would scare off under-aged kids. I bet there are some 12 year olds that could pass off as older by typing decent posts.

I think your idea is ok, as with every plan there is flaws. Like with a test, they could look up the answers real quick. With yours, they could post great for the first 2 then completely ignore what they are supposed to do.

Plus, we'd have to get Ramus to implement it, and who knows how difficult it would be, or if it is even possible.

Just one breath... incase that's all that is left...
by anugrah on Sun, 09/09/2007 - 10:13
True, True, I feel very bad for Ramus and thankful that he has helped through thick and thin. Let's say they  do ignore the rules after the 2 posts, they get 3 chances, If they don't stop, which they will, they will be banned. But there is another flaw within that, they could just make a new account and we wouldn't know about it at all.

I can't imagine. When i first came to MCN, I didn't read the rules, never knew that they existed until, well awhile later. All I looked at was the How-to's. After that i started going to the forum, my first forum that i have ever used in my internet history, (obviously MCN).

I didn't know about off-topic posts so as a typical nm's i typed in about how AOM was such a good game, and my post got deleted. Then i got a PM from Damien stating the rules and how i would be banned if i did it again. Well now because of him I'm safe and contributing to the community.
