Green Samurai

by NickGreat (Minifig MOC's)

I've actually started right after my Black Samurai was done. But I really took my time on this.
While my Black Samurai relied on decals for effect, this relies heavily on customised parts and accesories. Lego purists are gonna slaughter me.

The Samurai armour has the Green Gobby mask entirely replacing the front portion of the original armour. A little Sculpey was used to change the look of the eyes. As usual, sword clip behind to hold the katana.

The samurai helm is your standard SW skiff guard's. Two holes were drilled to the sides of the helm, with cut-up cattlehorns fitted on. (I later had to glue the horns on, as they weren't snug enough)

I finished the scythe last year, before I knew that the new Castle series were going to have it. This was originally intended for my Black Samurai, but the Kanji would not fit into this thinner blade.
The scythe blade uses ABS from one of those large 4x6 Lego flags. Two Lego clips were then cut and glued to the blade so that it'll click on to a polearm. Same concept as your official Lego axe-head.

The idea of the Fenris Wolf head for the Horse's helm, was also originally intended for my Black Samurai (but without those huge horns).
After hollowing out of the inside of the Wolf Head, I filled it with sculpey, forced it on, jammed more sculpey in, and boiled it together with the horse to achieve a "fit". With the sculpey contact to the Wolf Head being rough, while the horse head is smooth, the piece can be removed without much problems. This actually also makes it automatically fit the horse like a Lego piece.
Studs were then glued to the back of it so that two elephant tusks can be fitted as horns.

For the barding, the cut-out shape was rather painstaking. The barding design is meant to look like the torn skin of a Tatsu.
The decals were actually very difficult to put on; being such a large and unwieldy piece. I screwed up 3 sets before getting the forth one on. (RB was really forgiving on my clumsiness)

Again, many, many thanks to RB, who printed (repeatedly) all the decals for me.

Okay...
 I think I've bored you guys enough with my yakking. Hope you'll like the latest, Colour of the Samurai!

I rather enjoyed the story Nick, but you're right, I enjoyed the reveal much more. Truly one of the great additions to your collection of Samurai!  Every part has something to discover, but the horse helm is a real gem. I wouldn't want to be the one riding behind the horns though. Great job on the decals and barding too.

I can only imagine how much easier it would have been for the judges in the CCC if you had added these elements to the Black Samurai. Not that you need my advice, but may I just say Blue Samurai.

Flawlesss execution.
The barding work looks like some colossal venture few mortal would attempt   =D

It pains me but I have to bring this issue up, least the Samurai fail in actual battle.
I see only one problem, and it is not on the custom side but on the "pratical side" of the Samurai. Using a scythe he would have to swing his weapon to utilise its lethalness... but with the overgrown horn from the head armor of his mount that would proved to be difficult and self defeating. As you can see from the picture itself the curved horns are in the way should the Samurai ever attempts to raise his weapon overhead. His weapon are stucked in the awkward space which he could neither swing nor thrust it, leaving him severely handicap in mounted battle.

by NickGreat on Mon, 05/14/2007 - 21:44

Pharazon;
Heh thanks, I figured that since I put so much darn work into it, I might as well explain myself a lil more.
I'm not riding that beast either; since I won't be able to swing that weapon. And I'll hope that horse keeps looking straight ahead too.
but may I just say Blue Samurai.
Uhm... no plans at present for any colour. I'm taking a looooong break to recharge my batteries.

Fry;
Yeah, I thought of combat inability too. But like the rest of my samurai, I figured aesthetics is more important than being effective. heheh.
I've also actually thought of a darn cool story while I was at it too; Those horns are magical, and the scythe being made of the same magical material, passes right through. Neat eh!

Change the overgrown horn with standard viking horn, Nick, and I assure you non would dare to stand against your plague samurai. And congratulation on an excellent addition to your lethal group of custom figures.

That is one hell of a custom horse head armor btw sans the ultra horns.

AAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHH! ITS ANOTHER FANTASTIC SAMURAI!!!!

that wolf head looks absolutely awsome, i love the color, the metalic looking green is awsome and the contrast of the two colors looks fantastic. the horns remind me of a chopper with really wide handle bars perhapes the samurai could use them to steer the horse?......nah, that wouldnt work.

and as for that scythe thing, it rocks, it rocks hardcore i love the shape of it with the curved cut out like bits at the top, it would be sort of hard to use but lets put it this way. ( i know the character is fictional, this is a hypothetical)

lets say this samurai is a member of a certain clan that uses scythes, kama, kurisigama and things of that nature as a main weapon, sort of a family tradition and they teach swordsmanship and katana skills as a secondary  in case of an emergency where they loose their main weapon, if this were true im pretty sure the samurai would be really good at using the weapon as he had grown up training with it his whole life up to this point in time, even on horseback i would assume that he would be ok at using it, far better than anyone without experience with the weapon.

anyways, another great samurai custom, youve inspired me to get off my lazy backside and finish some of my wip's. keep up the great work.

Absolutley beautiful! I love your scythe especially! The wicked edge of the horse's barding! And that golden scaled desgin and flag! This is going on to my bookmarked list!

Hey vg838 thanks for the sig fig!

i really like it a lot but, if you look at the picture taken from the side,you can see the old horse pattern. But that is not a really big problem. The color combination of green and gold is very unique. Good job!

Thusly...

Anyway.

 Wow, Nick, you really are Great! I aready posted at CC, but who cares, because: This. Is. Awesome.
Seriously, This has to be your greatest one yet, the breastplate idea, the wolf head as horse mask... This is really fantastic, I'm somewhat at a loss for words.... wow. Oh, dam*, I just got drool on my keyboard...
Great job N.G.... but what else is new?

:EDIT: I forgot to mention, the horns on the Horse-helm reminds me of a goat, and for some reason, that seems very "Samurai-ish" to me. Great stuff.
:And another: I just saw what you did to the barding! Wow, I wouldn't have the gut's to cut one up in the first place, but If I did, it certainly wouldn't look this good!

Well Nick, this is very good. I like the black the best, and the red will always stand out because it was the first of your group, and had excellent use of the green goblin helmet. This one I really like for two reasons:

First and foremost the scythe.  It is fantastic! I would love to know how you made it. Was it using a lego flag and drawing our a design and sanding it?  Anyways, its beautiful.

Second, the horses helmet. I have been looking into doing the same type of thing with the wolf head. You have shown me it works and looks good, plus your added customizing is great, but then again you are "NickGreat".

Good job I love your work, dont stop now there are a lot of colors out there.

by l33tone on Tue, 05/15/2007 - 10:21
Great job Nick!  I think the helmet is great!  His breastplate/sparehelmet seems a bit bulky though.  The scales on the horse are great as well.  Once again, great job.

Another great job of a great customizer. How many hours of work did you put in to this custom?

I really like the use of the starwars helmet. It looks like one of the things I wouldn't find another use for eccept for the fig it's on! I really like the way you used the goblin mask. And I also like the fact that you use that mask in every one of your lego customs. How will you use it the next time...Perhaps as shield?? The wolfs head on the horse looks awsome! The horns aren't too long, they are just the right size! The barding also looks fantastic! Keep up the good work!

Fry;
Hey, I like my ultra horns! Seriously, my initial intention was to have a spiral type horn, much like a ram. But since Lego didn't have anything like that, I settled with those overgrown horns.
Yes, you got it, Plaque Samurai!
And you know what, Purple is on my mind!

Pork Demon;
Glad you like his weapon. Not sure where you are going, with regards to clans and such, but I would still prefer to think that his katana is still his primary weapon. That is why ALL my samurai (ok,ok, so there's only four) still have them.
And now that I've inspired you, get off your bum and finish your wip's! Go Go Go!! :)

Nameless Mage;
Since it still is the original barding, it's hard to run away from the basic shape of it. I've actually tried to retain as much plastic as I can (less work) but at the same time giving it a whole new look (hopefully).

Shadowviking;
Glad you like it.
If you recall, when I did my White Samurai, both Sticks and yourself actually gave me an idea for a Tan/Green pestilence samurai. This is in fact, a direct result of that idea. Thanks! See, I do listen.
You are quite right about it looking somewhat like a goat. The idea was to have a "ram head" like helm.

Schvatts;
For the scythe, I drew it out first on the computer, printed it, pasted it on the flag, that used a dremel and needle files to get that to shape. Incidently, it's the same technique for the barding.
The wolf head helm really works, and even looks better up close. You should definitely try it!

l33t;
Welcome back!
Thanks for the comps. The breastplate may look bulky, but no more than Lego's own Gamorrean Guard. I did have to file down the triangular (saddle) part on the barding for him to fit tho.

badboy;
I find the Skiff Helmet pretty versatile. One fantastic custom that uses it is that from Recluce's Lord of the Forest.
I have some other uses for the goblin head running in mine, but no concrete plans yet...

Pharazon;
I am taking a break from actual customization. I hardly find time nowadays when I get home. I will still be here at the forums tho, so I'll definitely be watching out for your customs. Continuation of the Griffin faction?

Thanks for the fine comments guys. I'm really glad most liked it.

Bravo!Finally I wait until.Nick,You did a great work again!Dark green. A beautiful color.As I said that I always like your color match.
I also found you chosen a good shape style at this time.The arc shape style. Different from the previous straight line modelling.(Black samurai).
I like both two.Great job!And what next......? No~go take a break.Just "Rainbow Samurai Team". :D

by Legofreak on Wed, 05/16/2007 - 00:00

Hey Nick! you da man!

your samurai rock. All of them. They are so detailed. As was pointed out earlier, the barding. I love the helmet, the scythe, the horse's helm, but my favorite is the barding. Really really awesome. those are so nice.

and what is this about a griffon faction? I did a search and nothing came up! I must know!
(I have a griffon fetish that only slightly rivals my monkey fetish :-D)

In the words of one of the greatest men of this century "Very nice...". The green colour is incredibely smooth, excellent paint job. Conversion work very clean especially the scythe blade. Everything is great except for the fact he rides a horse, only because at first glance I thought he was riding an elk. Maybe thats another good project for you, keep up the excellent work.

Arealight;
Thanks Hsu, glad you like it!
The shade of green actually took me a while to source. I initially bought another can of  dark green spray; but the test coat made it too military. I than figured that metallic was the way to go.
Now that you've mentioned it, it does have lots of arc(ish) patterns. Wasn't really intentional, but I did ensure that the barding and scythe shared similar patterns.
Rainbow Team? I think I REALLY need a break....

Legofreak;
I know has already been a while, but, glad to have you back, Pat!
The Griffin Knights faction was what (as I recall) Pharazon promised to deliver more off.
http://www.minifigcustomizationnetwork.com/forum/3888
So we'll definitely be in for a treat!

IA;
The green colour is incredibely smooth, excellent paint job.
Spray paints tend to automatically have that effect, that's why I like using them. Heh.
On the part of the steed, the idea I had was closer to a ram. I made it as a helm as I still wanted the main animal to be a horse.

As soon as I saw "Green Samurai" I was excited. But when I saw it was by you, I was dancing in my seat. When I saw the actual thing, my jaw dropped to the floor and continued down to China. That is an other beautiful piece, Nick. I love it. 'nuff said

...WOW. Shocked
You really customized.. everything, didn't you?

His armor and helmet are completely awesome. (I just love that Sciff Guard helm!) The Fenris Wolf horse helm is very nice, I wouldn't have thought of using it as such.
The barding- excellent.  As Fry said, it's not something alot of people customize.
I love that scythe, what an excellent idea to use a flag piece, so that it fits onto the pole!
Is that green paint metallic, or just real shiny?

So, I assume your next Samurai is on the way... ; )

Absolutely beautiful Nick, I think its your best yet. I love the scythe, the shape is magnificent. All of the curves and cuts are what really draw me in, it brings the fig to a whole 'nother level. I doubt that you could have picked better colors for this fig, its just perfect; all of the scales, perfect. Mind sharing what the characters on the flag and horse helm mean? I have some ideas that I wouldn't dare try that you might like for your next one, even though I know it won't be coming out for a while; I'll PM ya'. I doubt that I speak for everyone else, but I'm glad that you're taking a break- our stuff doesn't look nearly as good next to yours ;).

acepilot246;
Cool idea, but I'll stick with plain colours for the time being.

Commander Volt;
saw it was by you, I was dancing in my seat.
I tend to have that effect on people, but I think they're mostly hopping mad at me.
Seriously, glad you love the custom!

Amanda;
You really customized.. everything, didn't you?
No... I left the sword untouched. heh.
The paint I used is Pylox's Metallic Mulberry. Took me a while to source.
Actually, the scythe blade itself uses only the plastic from the flag. The clips are glued on seperately. You'll just have to cut a little notch on the clip to stick the blade into.
So, I assume your next Samurai is on the way...
Sure, after you come up with Android16, and oh yes, Buu! ;)

pacman;
As Fry has already hinted; the main flag has the "Plague" character. Same for the horse helm. So now you know; it's the Green Plague Samurai! Mwahaha!!
I won't be coming up with any more customs for a while, but I'm still looking out for ideas!

canceronyourface;
I'll work on that group photo once I repair my Red's flag. Seems the ink didn't last as well as I had hoped.
Not by me, but I'm sure there'll be lots more customs coming up to keep us satisfied!
