Question about Silicon casting

by Starwars4J (Tips, Techniques & Questions)
I read Recluse's excellent tutorial on silicon casting, however I have a couple of questions.

1. The process isn't dangerous to the part you're making a mold from, right?

2. Can the process of casting molds damage any paint or color the object you're molding has?

Thanks!

Since Recluce is taking a short vacation, I'll answer to the best of my abilities.

When I sent Rec a clone helmet for casting, she did warn me that it would stain it pink. So the answer is yes, silicone will discolor your piece.

As far as damage goes, I don't think it should. After all, what good would the mold be if it had a warped piece at the positive end.

Thanks Deathstickman.  To avoid the discoloring, would it be possible to give the outside a thin coat of talcom powder?  Or even a thin tape coat?  I realize that will make the whole thing slightly larger, but for what I need it doesn't really matter.  I'm planning on casting the robe from the Oxford Red Devil sets, as well as some of the weapons.  The weapons I don't care about discoloration, but the robes I'd really rather not, so I'm thinking about coating them.  Obviously the size difference would be minimized with the talcom.

If you know, that would be of great help!  If you don't...I don't plan on doing this for a bit anyway, so I can wait until Recluse is back.  Thanks!

Unfortunately I've never experimented with silicone casting, so I have no idea if there's a way to avoid it. (you could always paint it afterwards!)

And Rec should be back in a week.

My experience,

For question 1.
I can say yes.But depend on with which kind of method you come off your prototype from silicon mold.If you used knife. Then you must be very careful.

For question 2.
Usually yes,But if it's paint color from factory and that will not be damaged.

So my point is if you want to make a good silicon mold.you should clean up your prototype include colors.
Take a look my prototype. It's looks ugly and dirty a little bit.But its surface is very smooth.

Thanks Arealight!  But now I'm confused.  Apparently Recluse told Deathstick man that the white from the factory would be discolored, but you're saying factory colors aren't damaged?  Albeit it's black...so maybe it won't be noticeable?

Anyway I'll wait for a week, I just hope she sees it when the time comes

Maybe she was referring to the sculpy? I dunno, I guess this proves I never pay attention. ;)

Welcome,But I am also confused a little bit.Because the silicone will not have an effect with color of toys.It will only stick and let the color come off.So you said about talcom powder I prefer Vaseline.
And some kind like bad quality of toys maybe it's decals also bad.So I can't guarantee that decal will not be damaged by silicone.

I havn't done any casting in a while, but from what I had done, I never had a problem with the Silicone staining any of the official Lego pieces I tried to cast, but it did occassionally color the sculpey pieces, which, from my experiences, seem to always break on me when I cast them.. : |
I think I just need something stronger than sculpey.
