If you can't make the sword stay in the hand, apply a very fine layer of sculpy around the handle so that it fits better.  If you accidently applied too much, just sand it down again until it's perfect.  The color you use shouldn't be a problem, as things can always be painted (though if you plan on painting a handle you'll want to put a protective coat over it that will increase the thickness, which may solve the first problem for you!

When my custom lightsaber blades kept falling out of their handle, I wrapped a thin layer of tape around the end of the blade or in your case, the handle. Hope it helps!

If you want to make a sword, the only sure fire way of doing it is using styrene, people go to too much trouble making weapons out of clay it is a really hard material to work with. I would use some 1mm-2mm sheet Styrene to make the blade and some 3mm thick tube styrene, then it will never fall out again, look at the lightsabers in my brickshelf, they stick in the fig's hands like glue.
