Dragonball Z - Bulma, Tien, Chiaotzu, Android 17 & 18

by NickGreat (Minifig MOC's)

Quite a few characters this time round.

Not too happy on how Chiaotzu turned out, but in the comics, he had a really small body (compared to his head), and that was the distinguishing feature I could not replicate. His hat is entirely sculpey.

Bulma's headpiece was done first time round with sculpey on top and around a standard female hairpiece. I wasn't really satisfied as well, but twas just too lazy to try another.

Hairpieces for both Android 17 & 18 uses "filed down" standard female hairpieces. I heeded Damien's advice on using them and I feel it turned out pretty nicely (if I do say so).
Android17 has added sculpey for his hair to "wrap" his face a lil more. The holster idea was gleaned from Kaminoan/Terry after seeing this; mine's executed differently, but it's the same basic idea. I also decided to use a more modern gun from Brickarms.

Once again, many thanks to RB who helped me print the decals.

Hope you guys like this new batch!

( Trivia question; Why is the Tien minifig heavier than usual? )

Spot on, Nick. You nailed Vegeta quite awhile ago, and since then I've been waiting for you to crop up with my other favourite character - Android 17. He looks fantastic. You did a great job filing those hairpieces down into the right shape. I can say from my own attempts, to anyone that might doubt your skill, it's a lot harder than it sounds.

The musculature for Tien is great. I might have to steal that design for any bare-chested minifigs I do in the future -- with your blessing of course. Very well done.

Not sure why you don't like Chiaotzu so much. He looks pretty spot on to me. His head might be a little tall, but that's just one of the pitfalls of working with regular LEGO parts and the smaller legs. Sets things somewhat off-symmetry, as it were.

Great stuff, Nick.

Fantastic figures Nick! The hairpieces all look amazing as usual.

Trivia question, I'd say because you used a Patrick magnet torso?

by Pharazon on Thu, 03/01/2007 - 22:09
I think I had a nightmare with that Chiatozu character in it the other night. Aside from freaking me out a bit, these also are quite outstanding Nick! A perfect follow-up to your other customs. Are those decals on Android 18's arms or is that hand painted?

Incredible,  they are all very good. I'd have to say that the best is Android 17, followed by 18. Tien's body decal is quite good, as for bulma and chiaoztu they're no push overs either. I'd love to see them in a diorama. Maybe you should give brolly a try, It'd be good to see how you'd tackle that one.

Damien;
Now that you've mentioned, Chiaotzu's head does look tall. I wonder if I should have just sliced off the top stud, painted the hat in, then add the red ball..
Yup, Lego minifig parts can be limiting at times, but I suppose that's where the fun comes in to still make it as "Lego-esque" as we can.
Tien's muscle torso was inspired by (read; copied from) the actual comics itself. Feel free to use it. Here's the decal.

Sticks;
Wow that's fast; didn't take you long to figure out eh. Yup, it's a Patrick magnet.
For those who may wonder how I removed the hip from the torso, well I didn't; Patrick's hip is green, lucky me!

Pharazon;
Oh boy, now you're freaking me out....
My hands actually shake a bit when I do minute stuff like painting, so I had no choice but to make decals for Android18's arms. It did take me several tries to make a template that wraps around the entire arm like that.

 IA;
Thanks!
I would like to do a diorama too, but frankly, I'm quite bad when it comes to building stuffs (esp. backgrounds and buildings). It doesn't help that my actual Lego bricks are quite limited.
Brolly? Who's Brolly? I assume he's a saiyan cos he sounds like a vegetable.

Sweet too Sweet!  if Lego decided to make a Dragonball Z set, they should give you a call!  These characters are dead on, including Chiaotzu!...I think he perfect  the way he is!...are you planning any more Z characters?... or other characters from other anime?

Wow! Great customs, Nick! I love the Androids' hairpieces - very creative of you. The hankercheif is another nice mod. Android 18's gotta be my favorite of the pack. As always, awesome decals on all of them. You've even made me check these guys on Wikipedia - if you keep making customs like these, perhaps you'll even get me watch the series! :D

He is a Saiyan. He was in two of the DBZ movies (and his clone was in a third, if I recall correctly), but never in the show. Not sure if he ever appeared in the comics or not.

Man you own Dbz, so I suppose I'll give up even Trying. I'm gonna move on to something new, I've been watching Naruto laterley so thats where I'll begin. Really incredible work as I said before. I'm actualy really interested in how you got the shape out of the old hair pieces. Fantastic work and I hope you make many more.

Once again you have amased me! Now I'm thinking what fig will he make next? Nick, could you make a pic with al your dragonball figs on a row?

Oh you should make gohan (kid and adult) and chichi, I love chichi!

by NickGreat on Sun, 03/04/2007 - 18:56

lego machine;
As long as I can fine the time, I'll definitely do more Dbz. I don't think I want to touch on other animes at this point of time tho.

UA;
Wow. I didn't know Wiki had anything on it....
Frankly, I didn't watch the series either. But I did read the manga series. DragonballZ has always been some sort of trip back to my younger, comic reading days.

Damien;.
I never saw him in the comics. Come to think of it, I did come accross him in an old SNES game once. The huge version, I think. The game was in Japanese, so I didn't catch his name.

IA;
Of course you could go for Naruto, but that doesn't mean you should give up on Dbz.
As I mentioned, the hair are standard female hairpieces. For the Androids, I basically filed the sides flat to "straighten" the hair; filed the grooves back in, after which, slowly filed/dremelled the front to give the hair a up-swept style.

badboy;
I'm quite ashamed that I do not have Goku to go along with the group. So until then, it's unlikely I'll have that group shot.
I'll definitely like to have Gohan and ChiChi too. We'll see. :)

Anyway, those are awesome. No faults whatsoever.

Maybe not slice off the stud but just add a small red circular piece, or paint the stud red.

Fantastic work, as always Nick!
I think Android 17 is my favorite of this group, with all the others close behind.

All of the custom sculpey pieces are just great, especially on the Androids. Very nice!
You really pulled these off just perfectly.
..So, when are we going to see more DBZ Customs from you? (Or another Samurai for that matter. ; ) )

-I am currently working on finishing my Goku. I showed him off in WIP form quite a while back, but never got to completing him..
Then I can safely get to work on 16. (And eventually my favorite character- Teen Gohan.)

That sounds like it may work! I'll give it a try.

Amanda;
Thks! I like Android17 too; considering the number of custom parts I had to do for just that one fig...
I've actually peeked at your brickshelf folder earlier, and saw your wip on Goku's supersaiyan and Android16's hairpiece. ;) Looking good! Btw, what happened to your Buu you were planning to do?
Myself, I really really wanted to showcase an Android16 together with 17 & 18, but alas, my skill level is limited...
(I like the way you updated us on your DBZ progress before I started poking/annoying/badgering/pestering/bugging you for it . Heheh)
My next samurai is complete, save for the decals which I am awaiting. Hopefully, it'll be a worthy follow-up. Afterwhich, I think I'll take a customization break...

So, your Samurai is nearly complete. I wasn't expecting that! What with you turning out all these DBZ customs, I'm surprised you found time to work on him. Can't wait to see it. : )

Thks! I like Android17 too; considering the number of custom parts I had to do for just that one fig...
Yeah, does look he had the most work put into him. But it's definetely worth it, he's amazing!

I've actually peeked at your brickshelf folder earlier, and saw your wip on Goku's supersaiyan and Android16's hairpiece..
Sad news about that SS hairpiece though. While trying to remove it from the head after baking, it broke.. I think from now on I'm using the basic male hairpiece as a base from now on. Luckily, I am near finished with a second hairpiece. (16s hair is still fine though :) )

As for Buu, he's still one I want to do, but I havn't had any luck finding vinyl dye to make pink pieces.

by NickGreat on Mon, 03/12/2007 - 00:46

Amanda, sorry to hear bout goku's SS hairpiece. Can't wait especially to see Android16 (my fav)!
I've just done Buu's decal, but I still haven't found a solution to the pink issue either.

oricalcosmtr,
SuperSaiyans? Buu? Patience, Amanda is working on them. I bet they'll be fantastic!

Just an update on how I did the holster for Android17. I basically "thinned" these two parts and glued them together.

Off the top of my head, you could try dying a piece in red dye for a short enough time it will come out as pink. Kinda like an under-dyed easter egg.

by Lamanda2 on Mon, 03/12/2007 - 21:06

I suppose that would be worth a try, Sticks. Might try that out when I get offline, thanks for the idea.
Thanks for showing us how you did the holster, Nick. I wouldn't have even thought you used those parts.

That's a good idea, Sticks. I should try that out too. Over here, we actually do dye our eggs red (they usually turn out pink) for certain customary celebrations. I can definitely get my hands (or minifigs) on those dyes.
