3 new helmet casts: Cody, Bacara, and Skiff Guard.

by Recluce (WIP, Decal & Customizing Chat)

Well it took me a while to get pics as I never had enough daylight during the week.  Even now these pics are not great, but I think you'll get the idea.  Pictures of the finished helmets (painted, decals, etc) will come later, I'm pretty busy with orders, CCC4, and of course the holidays.

Cody:  One of my most intricate casts, its perfect in every way I can think of.

Bacara:  It's accurate, but still a pretty plain helmet.

Skiff Guard:  Modified slightly from the original (to make it cast better), this is one awesome helmet.  Great in all colors, and the metallics really make it look sinister (the one pictured is a light grey resin with a silver powdercoat).  Castle heads will want one.

The Galleries

And an update on some other projects:  The Endor rebel helmet Jared sent me is being a tough bugger to cast.  So far none have come out without bubbles, so I'm still altering the vents to improve quality.  The green though is a pretty close match.  Also, I've developed an awesome concept for a full fig of the Halo Masterchief.  It's gonna take me a while to develop, but once done it's going to be the most detailed and realistic MC to date.  Stay tuned, maybe I'll let you in on the secret as its being sculpted.

They look excellent.  Cody looks perfect, along with barraca.  Still not sure what the leather flaps on his helmet do though...

Wow, are you going to make completed figs for bacara and cody? I really want to see better detail on those two helmets. The lando skiff helmet looks like just the thing for a project of mine, you might have PM soon...

by Recluce on Sun, 12/17/2006 - 23:01
Yes, I'll be making completed figs for Cody and Bacara, but I'm really busy with other stuff right now.  Usually I don't show new helmets without a finished product, but I wanted to get these to you all ASAP.  Many of you were being patient, but some people were PMing me regularly wanting to know if they were ready yet.  And vidgamer, I think this helmet is so versatile that you'll be seeing them on a lot of new customs.  I look forward to seeing what you've got in mind for one!

"AWESOME" all three helmets are awesome, if I had to pick? I love the Skiff Guard helmet the best! just looking at it gave me ideas for different styles of helmets with a little mod or add on.  "Two Thumbs Up"

by obliviumjr on Mon, 12/18/2006 - 11:49

ha ha, that is absolutely amazing recluse, the skiff guard helmet has to be my favourite, not that the others aren't good, theyre awesome as well, i just like the skiff helmet because its painted ;) i really can't wait for the finished products, you know you could make cool sunhats with the skiff design, just cut off the front part... amazing... can't wait to see more of your works Recluse

keep customizing!

Oblivium, the Skiff helmet is NOT painted, it's a metallic powder that I brush on the mold before pouring in the resin.  The silver will never rub off as it's now part of the plastic.

As for sun hats.... whatever would I do with a sun hat?

I'll try to get the other two helmets painted up by next weekend so I can take pictures of them. Those pics really do not show the detail in the designs.

urr... maybe you could make some new beach figures... or some nerds, or chavs, oh, and pink one's for some certain motor cyclists... i dunno, just thought it'd be nice... :)

P.S, the skiff helmet looks a bit too well painted now i come to think about it, but it still remains my favourite

Cody is looking really perfect! Bacara looks good too, but probably needs some decals and paint to finish the effect. Can't wait to see them in "action"!

And that Skiff guard helmet.... I'm using it for my next uhm, project (well there goes the surprise element). I actually had to sacrifice Lando's helmet for that. If only you had shown this a wee bit earlier. Well at least now I know where I can get more of them...

Nick, you could always ask.... I've got about half a dozen modls done that I haven't made public yet.  And you're not alone in using it for future projects.

And I think I can "guess" what you're going to use them for ;)

I did think of asking actually, bout casting that skiff helm. But it did look kinda complicated to replicate. You pulled it off beautifully.

Want thing I have always meant to ask about resin casts; can they be easily modded (ie; cut, grind/sanded)?

The Skiff Guard Helmet has a few good mod for different helmets, I knew NickGreat would pick up on the first one....But like Obliviumjr I also came up it a sun type hat., but not for the beach. I was thinking like adding some goggles cut the grill for a sand dweller, or desert troops helmet.

other ideas includes : if you cut out the grill

Duchy of Zeon Trooper helmets

Space miner helmet,

paint it yellow you have a fishermen hat

the helmet offers alot of possibility for some great minifigs custom, I can't wait!

you can also create naboo pilots from the SW prequels :) you could also modify it to make a MC, but i don't think thats what your gonna do, right? oh also not saying your old or anything, just saying, how on earth did you get your hands on some of the old lego fig bodies, i've been after them for months, couldn't find them on B-Link or Ebay, do you cast them?

I like Cody and Bacara the most. Why? Because they look something that Lego would make. Will you ever make Snowtrooper helm? I would love to see one.

by Recluce on Wed, 12/20/2006 - 14:43

I do plan to make the snowtrooper helm and backpack (both separate pieces).

Resin is actually softer than ABS so it's easier to mod a cast helmet than an official Lego helmet.

No, not using a skiff guard helmet to make the MC, I've got 2 or 3 other helmets to chop up to make that.

The old style lego bodies that I use to model my helmets are actually casts.  I made a mold of it and pour my waste resin into it (extra resin from a pour).  Then I have bodies to sculpt on, paint, etc.  They're good for not having to ruin a real lego minifig.  I usually include one or two of them in the orders I send out so people can use them to finish the helmets they purchase.

While you're on the subject of helm separated from the backpack.......or should I say jetpack ;). i think doing the same thing for boba/ jango fett  helms would be really sweet. Just thought i would mention that. By The Way those helmets are slick. Yay! it's shiny lol.

Thanks

I already have, just haven't poured the second half of that mold.  I will be honest, I've slacked a bit on that project and it should have been done 2 weeks ago.  On the topic of backpacks.... I'd like to make a clone backpack, maybe the commando version.

That would be a very cool project. By the way i mentioned the boba helm thing because i tried the method most people do it in, and i ended up completely messing up my only mandolorian  helm. Which really stinks because as far as starwars fans go, i'm a fandolorian lol.

Just got back from vacation, and I'm glad I looked at this topic.  All of them look really good, but what exactly did you modify on the Sail Barge helmet?

by Recluce on Thu, 12/28/2006 - 14:54
The Sail Barge helmet has some internal modifications, made mainly to increase the quality of cast I can create.  Lego uses a professional casting process which can do things I cannot, so many Lego helmets have to be modified internally to better suit my technique.  It is not a visible change with the fig wearing the helmet, and I'd bet you'd only notice the difference if you had an official helmet to compare it to.

They are nice! That Bacarra helmet is my favourite, I may have to purchase one soon.

The skiff gaurd rocks out loud. I don't have the sail barge but it was that helmet that caught my attention, so maybe a few of those in my shopping basket also.

All the resources of a site like this and you have to ask this publically?  Please remember there is not only a vendor section of the forum but also a PM function.

Asherpotter the pics you posted were too large, I have removed them.  Also, please be aware that it is off topic which can be deleted.  Furthermore, it is generally considered rude to post your own creations in another user's topic unless they are asking for examples.  Let me assure you that I am not asking for examples of others' work.  If you wish to show what you have made, start your own topic for it.
