First Age Elf

by Pharazon (Minifig MOC's)

This guy has been done for a while but all the elements recently came together. He is an Elf of Gondolin of the First Age of Middle Earth. Gondolin was the most magnificent city the Elves built in Middle Earth. Their Knights were described as wearing silver armor and white cloaks. Perfect timing for the unknown-artist-studio : )

The biggest thanks to Damien, Fineclonier.com and UnknownArtist for their help.

I tried to design his armor to work with Redbean's already established Elf designs. Much is inspired by Alan Lee's sketches. The sharp ones among you will recognize his blade. I am relatively happy with his laurel since each leaf was hand cut and individually placed. My digital camera doesn't pick up the nuances so well between the silver and white, it is much 'smoother' in real life. I hope you guys can see it well enough. Gallery when public, comments welcome!

I have a comment.

First off, I'd like to say that the shield, sword, and helmet are my favorite parts of this custom.

The decals are nice, but the face looks too squeezed together. It doesn't look very Lego-ish to me. I can't really comment on the torso and legs because I have never seen your reference.

Keep on Customizing!

I would have to agree with BJ I think the eyes are just a little to small but everything else looks awsome so keep up the good work.

Simply beautiful. I'll like to rave bout the sword, shield, decals and cloak (wow, I've got to bug UA for one too), but what I'm really, really impressed with is the helm.

The crown of leaves looks almost like a floating halo. What did you make the leaves of? And that base helm; I pride myself for knowing what parts are used, but I'm stumped. Help me out here, please. And is that pearl white I see on it?

Simply beautiful.

It came together really well, Phar. All the lines and curves of the equipment and design really compliment each other well. Another great addition to your Middle-earth.

As for the face problems -- you can all blame me for that. When I vectored the design for Phar, the entire thing was a little small for the template. I expanded the torso and such, but I forgot to stretch the face as well, which would have made it a bit bigger and more open.

Absolutely fanastic work all around, Pharazon, the decal work and shield in particular.  I like the helmet as well, but laurel (?) crown might work better if it rested slightly higher on the helm.

Very nice Pharazon!  Is this going in the CCC4?  Man, I gotta come up with something good if I'm going to compete with you all.

Magnifico Pharazon,Magnifico! I really like the accesories for this custom, especially the shield. And the white cloak just completes it.

Those who tell me I am too old for legos must die a horrible death by the hand of a custom minifig. >:D

by Pharazon on Wed, 12/06/2006 - 02:49

Thanks guys, I'm glad you like the accessories. I had a different shield design for him in the beginning but Damien pointed out it looked kind of dumpy. He did put it more politely than that. Admittedly, I have a hard time with face decals. It's just one of those things. It looks good on screen and even on paper, but when applied it doesn't always look right. I'll try harder next time.

BJ~ Of course you can comment on his torso and legs. There was no reference pics for him. I just took the description out of The Book of Lost Tales 2 and combined that with the established Elf look (No matter how inaccurate it may be).

Nick~ Yes the UAS cloak is the icing on the cake as far as I am concerned, it's just great stuff. Don't worry about your pride taking a hit, the cap is a smoothed hair piece and greenstuff built around it. It started out as an attempted coif but didn't quite have the effect. His laurel (my favorite part after the cloak) is made form very thin styrene and a bit of copper wire glued to his cap. As I said, each leaf was dremeled out and shaped one at a time, then super-glued in place. It took a few days and some patience but paid off IMO.

Dam~ Of course I wouldn't blame you per-say but that does make sense. I know I have issues with face designs but I was a little surprised how small the face looked when compared to his Elf peers. I hope you feel your labor paid off too.

Badger~ Thanks. Yup I can agree with you but if I remember correctly (it was several months ago) I really wanted to keep the laurel with an extreme pitch so the back sat nearly in the middle of the cap.

Rec~ I too get more and more claustrophobic about this year's competition. I'd feel a little guilty if I entered this guy in. Hopefully the entry I am working on the CCC IV will at least make it in to the honorable mentions category.

Arealight~ His laurel was inspired by some Dore's illustrations for Dante's Divine Comedy I saw a long time ago. Actually, I didn't do any sketch work for this guy at all really. All of his lines are pure geometry overlapped and Photoshopped. I must have gone through over a dozen variations before settling on this one. Maybe out of pure frustration ; )

Ah, I had figured it was something like that.  I blame the minifig for not having ears.

I must agree the eyes are to close together, but the rest of it looks awsome!

By the way, could you make it so that we could print those decals- I realy like them.

Dragon Rider: Do not double-post. I would have merged your posts, but I just deleted the second one since it had nothing to do with this thread. Pharazon's custom is in no way related to Eragon. You didn't post a picture of any custom figure in your post, and even if you had -- this thread is not the appropriate place for it. Try to mind the rules in the future. Thank you.

Wow!!!

Imagine my shock of having been away for a few days then coming back to the sight of... THIS?!

Amazing! Incredible! But since I see I'm already much to late to praise it now, I'll just comment on the fact that it is usually much more difficult to design a new fig that belongs to a pre-define general image than to come up with a completely new design from scratch, but you've done this task admirably and masterfully! The white color is also something which I never thought of myself but it does add a sense of elegance to the fig that befits a 1st age elf.

The accessories themselve are good enough to make Da Vinci proud :)

I love the custom pieces you made for this minifig. The shield and the sword-ish thing look really awsome, really elfish. I only have one question. What is the silver thing on the helmet?

(ps I like the helmet too, i just don't know what the silver thing is!)

by Damien on Sat, 12/09/2006 - 02:04

The white color is also something which I never thought of myself

Psst, Red. . . your Armoured Celeborn custom utilizes silver armour on a white body.

Red~ Regardless of Da Vinci, I'm glad you like it. As I said, I went through almost a dozen variations of his armor and I felt this one really fit into the lineage of Elf designs. I was worried the all white might be hard to pull off but it turns out it's just hard to get good pictures of.

BadBoy~ The silver thing is a laurel. Similar to what this guy is wearing, anybody know who he is? ; ) Being Elvish, I imagined it made out of silver and attached rigidly as to not cause any problems in combat. Constructing it only cost me a few finger tips.

Wow! Ethan, this is just amazing. A real work of art. I have seen the spoilers you sent me and expected a truly awesome custom, but oh my god, this is beyond my expectations. Don't even think about entering CCC with that one, you won't leave anyone else a chance to win (not that you do anyway...) ;)

...wow, I've got to bug UA for one too...

Hehe, you don't know how much the poor fellow suffered to get it - since I knew it was going to be used with an official white torso, I was going for an exclusive lego-ish off-white (not the usual UAS bright white) and the production took a few ruined cloaks till I got the right mix. Getting ready some extras also took time so the delay was enormous, yet Ethan didn't complain at all - what an angel of a man! :D

Man, how could I have missed this topic for 5 days?!

Very impressive work on this Ethan, that UA cloak suites him just perfectly, and of coarse your shield is just stunning! All around this is one amazing work of custom art, everything just comes together so nicely.

Yes, don't you dare enter this guy, it just wouldn't be fair! :P

Oh no, this guy is going to hang out with his Elf buds and share tales of Gondolin I'm sure. I have something a little less ambitious for the CCC4. Maybe I'll get the face right this time.

Unknown Artist wrote:

Angel of a man huh? Why can't a woman say that kind of stuff to me ; ) Anyway, how could I possibly complain about a cool cat such as yourself. Thanks much exerting your craftsmanship. He just wouldn't be complete and only half as cool with out it!

I like the elf. everyone complains about the face and I think H*ll no. I love all of it. I'm going to have to really step it up on my customizing to at least be looked at. Keep doing a great job.

I really enjoy the cloak as well.  You did an excellent job on all the details and you are a true artsman.  I can't wait to see what you come up with next.

P.S.  Sorry I'm a little late posting.

Better late then never to glorify me I always say. I can't wait to see what I come up with next either considering I'm out of ideas at the moment.
