Lego Mythos?

by brickman144 (Brick Talk)
Wouldn't it be great if LEGO made a mythology theme? Not solely based on but mostly greek myths. They already have cerberus and a griffon from the harry potter series. A centuar would also be very great.

Ah yes, I always dreamed of such a theme. Mainly because I would love to see TLC put out some great Roman minifigs and a colleseum set would rock.

..We sure can dream. : )

Oh that would be great! All those mythological creatures! BTW you can make a centor pretty easily yourself!

by Radium Radiator on Sun, 09/24/2006 - 05:07

Lamanda2, TLC probably wouldn't be able to do a colleseum set, but if they did, it would be historical, not mythological.

I just wish TLC would make a mythology theme! I'll have to make do with my own Greek gods and gates to the underworld... I'd be happy with 2 Greek myth sets, 2 Egyptian and 2 Norse.

I've actaually created a Lego Hippocampus, by shaving a horse in half and building the tail. No photos yet though.

Am I the only one who, when seeing the word "Mythos", IMMEDIATELY thinks H.P. Lovecraft? Now _that's_ a lego theme I could get behind. Or run screaming from. ;-)

by Damien on Sun, 10/15/2006 - 00:38

I think of a lot of things when I hear 'mythos.'  Lovecraft comes to mind, absolutely. But his stuff wouldn't work in LEGO form. His creatures are either ethereal or entirely too complex -- too many arms, eyes, wings, hands, etc. It would end up looking like a blocky mess. Besides, the Great Cthulhu is enormous. In LEGO form he'd have to be at least 20 inches tall. Now there's a project for you. ;)

Not to mention TLG would never make a theme based on blood, psychotic episodes, and pure horror. More's the pity.

As for a mythology theme. I can dig it. Would be great. And it probably won't happen. It would require quite a few brand new molds, and I doubt TLG would be willing to put that kind of money behind a project that, believe it or not, is not guaranteed to be successful. TIme will tell.

Heh. The very _second_ the big Viking sets go on clearance, all those midgard serpent sections will be perfect for Great Ct'hulhu's tentacles. >:-) While waiting for that blessed occasion, I'll practice by making a  Great Old Pumpkin: http://www.strangehorizons.com/2004/20041025/pumpkin-f.shtml .

One word: Vikings.

Anyway, you're probably right about the unlikelyhood of a pure mythology theme, but I as long as Lego has the rights to Harry Potter, we can at least hope for occasional fantasy critters. I'm really annoyed that they didn't make a centaur for the first tie-in sets, though. :-p

Just found some person on brickshelf's centaur, using a proper lego horse body. I wonder how it's done?

At risk of sounding like a mod, but is that a triple post I see?  Have you read the rules?

Nope, only mods can delete, and don't worry, there are no consequences for accidental posts.

Probably the only time we'd see the word "cyclopean" used in a set description.  Then again, the inhabitants of Innsmouth would make for interesting minifigs.  "Sacrifice to Dagon" minifig pack, here we come!

Like many have said, a "mythos" line is one of many oft-mentioned popular ideas for a line.  Considering how closely TLC monitors these forums and how often the idea has been brought up in various "Ask LEGO" venues, I'm sure they're aware of the AFOL interest in such a line.  However, as Damien said, the deciding factor would be interest among younger LEGO fans and the cost of new molds.

Considering we've seen the Viking line continue for two years now, it's possible another historical-fantasy line might be viable from the perspective of TLC.

A mythology line would be sweet.

A mythos line would be pointless, everyone knows that all

I don't think that would be very cool nor would it sell very well.

Yeah. I don't see how a Mythology-theme would fail to sell. AFOLs would gobble them up like candy. And most kids love that kind of thing as well. I sure did, and still do. A Mythology line has the potential to outsell the craptastic KK2 by appealing to kids -and- adults more equally. As for whether or not it would be cool -- that's personal preference. But I find it odd that a customizer would NOT want all the interesting new pieces that would accompany a Mythology theme.

Don't forget that Mega Bloks (whoops! gotta duck! :D ) has some Narnia sets out that have a Cyclops and a Minotaur. So if that's selling somewhere I can see LEGO being able to tack creatures like that onto their castle sets (I hear Minotaurs eat Jelly Beans like candy :D ). Personally, I'd like to see LEGO get some "realistic" looking creatures. That is one more thing that I do like about MB, their dragons (the reptiles, not the line) look incredible, plus they started putting out some other mythical creatures.

Is a matter of fact I would like to see a lego Minotaur myself, I would also like to see a lego cyclops, again like Alan said. But I am not a fan of megablocks, they may have okay looking creatures, but they are not of my interest (I can't quite explain them).

DESTROY MEGABLOKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

What is so wrong with megabloks? They have awsome wall peices and such. They have a ridable griffin and a phenix looking ridable. And the variety of weapons......

Stupid-looking figures that aren't nearly as customizable as LEGO figures, combined with extremely low quality bricks tends to make MB very unpopular among LEGO-fan circles.

Thanks damien, that was the point I was trying to make (but didn't). MB also has hard to fit peices. I still have those annoying figures and bricks today, so I don't plan to get any creature from them.

LBD: I removed one of your comments there. What you said invariably starts a big issue and it's best we don't let anything like that start up. Thanks.
