Dear all,

Since our first MCN shield contest was such a great hit one year ago, MCN is proud to announce the 2nd MCN Shield Design Contest, which begins today!

The rules are as straightforward as last time around. Basically, all you have to do is to come up with a flat 2D design for the new Knights Shield (available here) by using this template. We are looking for designs that best epitomize originality while at the same time retaining a certain mercurial Lego-esque feel, with the eventual winner being determined by a panel or MCN mods. Grand prizes will be awarded!

Here are the rules:

1. Each person is allowed a maximum of 3 entries, each of which must be submitted via this form. (failure to observe this rule can result in disqualification in this contest).

2. The design must be applicable to the Knights Shield. Template can be found here.

3. The following entries are accepted: hand-painted, computer program-aided or hand-drawn and scanned.

4. Contest deadline is 15 October, 2006. Winners will be announced at the end of the month.

Prizes:

The Grand Winner will receive a special custom-made minifig, either designed by the winner himself/herself or by Redbean at the winner's request. This fig will be an absolutely unique sig-fig that will not available anywhere else (just like MicBean from the previous contest).

Two runner-ups will receive an actual Knights Shield printed (by water-slide decals) with their own winning designs. This is also a collector item that is not available anywhere else.

If you have any other questions regarding the details of the contest, please post them in this thread.

Can I  please get a template for the blank shield for  the draw plus format, I tried makeing it myself but I can't use the curve tool and my attempts were coming ot really crapy. I would really apreciate it because i would love to enter the contest and i dont want to make it in MS paint. If you can mke it in draw plus, or if someone else could do it, please send the file to my Email:

On our design, should we just leave the background blank for waterslide printing, or is it up to us to decide if we want a background?

*EDIT*

Can we comment on designs in the entries forum as well?

Sounds like fun, but when you say original does that mean we can take a symbol from something non-Lego and use it or is the design supposed to be completely new? Either way I'm all for it.

marhar: I don't have the software drawplus so can't help you with this. But what you may want to consider doing is to simply download the template in jpg format and retrace the outline in drawplus. This task should not be too difficult.

vidgamer838: You can do whatever you like with the background, and yes, you may provide a comment on your design if you wish.

Can we swap out designs for new ones if we change our minds on whether or not we want them to be the ones in the contest? -Pac

Polish~ Originality will be part of the judging process, but that doesn't mean you can't use existing Lego designs. It's up to you, and remember, you get three entires so do what you feel.

VG~ I don't make the rules but my inclination would be no. The link is for posting of entries only and I think it would inappropriate to comment on other's designs.

Pac~ Ultimately I'll defer to RB about this, but the idea of swapping out designs seems to run contrary to the three-per-member rule. The solution would be to only post a design if your 100% sure it is finished.

CB~ Nope. Hence the idea to inject fresh blood in to our design pool.

Marhar/Redbean; concerning the shield for Draw Plus, from what I can see "Heroshield.JPeG"  [from above] would have to be converted to be able to be imported. As such, Marhar (and anyone else wanting to use Draw Plus), try this pic of the shield: http://www.brickshelf.com/gallery/PeterNix/Miscellaneous/heroshield.jpg. And unless I'm wrong for a change, you shouldn't have to retrace the shield (unless you want to, or the file I converted looks bad)- just start designing.

Okay one question. I just redesigned one of my shields. Is it okay for me to take the original picture down and substitute it with the new one.

Couldn't you only judge the ones that are on there when you check on October 15? One rule to make that work though- you need to replace your old ones, not just post new ones. The old ones cannot be in the topic or you are disqualified. That may seem a bit harsh but what say you mods and admins? -Pac

I just want to say cool contest and I will probably enter. I hope I never have the lamebrains to become a mod  ;  ). No offence. I didn't mean it, you guys are awesome. We need a contest that you can enter, though.

P.S. I agree with Pac. I think you should be able to switch it up right until the judging begins. Why not?

Guys, sorry for the late reply.

To clarify the rules: I agree with Pharazon and others that one should not be able to alter a design once it has been posted. Sorry but it would just cause too much problem to keep track of who has entered what.

DD: thanks for offering to make a template for drawplus.

In addition to what Phar and Red have already stated, I'll remind you guys (just because it's pertinent, not because I think anyone will try it) not to pull any funny business and try to change out your designs hoping no one will notice. I'm online quite a bit and I'm keeping tabs on what's been posted. If you edit a post to change an entry of yours to something else, you'll be violating the rules of the contest and I imagine that would result in a disqualification.

I'll also remind everyone that this contest goes until mid-October! Calm down. Many of you are posting designs way too quickly. Take your time. You don't need to post any designs until closer to the deadline. Make sure you're happy with your finished designs before posting any of them. Don't just post up the first three things that you throw together in 6 minutes. There's no rush, and there are no awards for who gets their designs posted the fastest.

Take your time.

(After all, you wouldn't -need- to go back and change your entries if you waited to make sure your entries were your best work.)

That's cool. Thanks for the info. I have a few more questions but they don't have anything to do with the contest.

Ok...

I have made a few changes in the contest entry submittal process.

Entries will NO LONGER be submitted / posted here.  Entries must now be submitted via the new MCN Contest form found HERE.

A few things to note:
  • All submitted entries are NOT visible to the public until after Oct 15th.  (the deadline for all submissions)
  • Once you submit an entry you CAN NOT edit it.
  • The time of which you submit an entry (now or later) has no bearing on judging
  • Maximum entries per user is still 3
For those of you who have already submitted entries via the forum post, please resubmit your entries via the new form.

This system was setup for several reason.  First, it will make viewing & rating the submissions MUCH easier for the judges.  Second, it helps to prevent any possible "borrowing" of designs or ideas.  Not that we have yet had any problems.

If you have any questions please let us know.

I would like to ask some things.

Do you us want to post:
  • a link to the (let's say bricklink) image url or
  • a picture of the shield or
  • a link  AND a picture?

Also is there a limit to the detail applicable to the shiled? Is there a maximum dpi that we could work with which combined with the standard wanted printable size of the shield could give a *maximum* level of detail?
Should we use the dpi and size (in cm or inches) of the template only? The template is 4.65*7.97cm and and 72 dpi.

You only need to provide a picture. With the uploading tool in the Contest Form, you can upload the picture directly from your desktop.

The only limit concerning detail is what you think will show up when printed. Hundreds of tiny spirals (for instance) may look cool at 300x on screen, but won't show up when printed. So be aware of that and you'll be fine.

Just use the size of the template only, don't worry about DPI.

Yes I know... for most printers having a flie above of 150 dpi and a another of more that 150dpi doesn't make any difference in the printed quality.

If we had submitted shields to the old topic, do we have to resubmit those or can we put in other ones? I didn't know whether or not puting in different ones than last time would result in disqualification. -Pac

If you knew, oleth, why did you ask, exactly?

Pacman: Yes, because of the change in format you can choose to submit different designs than you originally did. But choose carefully and slowly -- you won't be able to change them once they're in the database.

The template was in 72dpi. Some entries changed the size up to 530*900 px, thus producing a print of size 4,6*7,6 cm of 300dpi. Since I am new here, I thought it would be better to ask instead of making assumptions :-)

Got'cha Oleth. It's not a big deal if you don't have a program that can hold the correct size. Winning entries can always be resized by Red anyway. So long as you work in the outline of the template, everything is fine.

By 'the image' do you mean the template?  Precise language really helps people understand you. If you're talking about the template, I imagine you can download or copy-paste it. I'm not that familiar with Paint (which is the program I assume you're talking about), but I don't think it matters.
