Thanks guys, glad you like it. The exact piece I used was the Cylinder Half 2 x 4 x 4. Peeron number:6259. I suppose some purists will find this wasteful, but it does have the advantage of having the curve built in, also I get an average of two shields out of one piece.

Absolutely fantastic Phar! Don't forget that you can also use plates of bolser (I think it's spelt like that) wood, wet it and place on a rounded surface, then pin it down and let it dry, and it wil stay in that shape! It is also easy to cut and you get that cool wood effect.

Hey good idea Viking, I'll just have to go cut down a few trees to try it out ; ) Good luck when you try it out CB. Post a few pics of the finished product too.

Actually, the Balsa Wood idea is a good idea- especially for (pardon for sounding like a pun) wooden shields (Vikings, I think). Balsa from what I've heard is very lightweight (used on model rockets and those rubber-banded propeller planes...). I don't know how much it costs, but I'm sure they'd also have dowels (correct word? correct spelling?) which could be used for handles as well.

Yes, you can get a variety from balsa, you can get dowel and alsorts. In fact, I'm using it now to make a shield for a minifig which has my coat of arms on it, it's cheap and it is very light, thin too, you can get it in most modelshops.
