Numenorean Spearman

by Damien (Minifig MOC's)

A very slight redesign on my original Numenorean. This one was done to make way for two more I have planned (a knight and an archer), so I needed some coherency in the design of the overall figs. I kept the Greek helmet, crest-less. Changed out the sword for a spear, removed the cape and the brown hands (gloves) for bare hands and, most noticably, added a non-Greek shield.

In real medieval times, of course, men painted designs onto their shields themselves. I went with that idea for this low-born Numenorean spearman and imagined that he, at some point or another, was a sailor. This would give him a reverence for the stars. Thus, he painted his shield with a stylistic interpretation of stars, and kept with the Numenorean theme of black and white (or in this case silver).

Yes, there is a smudge on the shield. I had a problem with my clearcoat sealer and the smudge couldn't be helped. I wasn't about to do another shield and throw this one away just because it has a little discolouration on it - so, oh well.

Keep an eye out for my Numenorean archer, who should be showing up in the next few days.

You can see the revised entry in the Minifig Customs section here.

Amazing, i love the shield, very stylish, and original. (By the way the smudge isn't very visilbe, so, good job covering it up.)

Awesome, I totally love it, but how big do I print it out, and what kind of printer do I use? Can't wait to see the archer!

One exclamation and/or question mark at a time will suffice Stuff. If the designer of the decal wants, he/she will make it publicly available in the Customs Section. There you can copy the design and print it out, but do remember to give credit where credit is due.

Damien~ Pretty sweet shield. Makes sense and looks great, hand painted? I still think you should file down the ridge that accepts the crest. It's really quite easy and if you use a fine enough sand paper, and can't even tell it was modified. A proper Numenorean Archer is what is needed now, keep it up!

Wow! Pretty cool fig man. I doubt that most people would have been able to spot that smudge if you hadn't pointed it out. What happened to the other Numenorean that you had posted in the customs section? I looked in your recent entries and it wasn't there. -Pac

Sweet! Might be sweeter if the helm is painted same silver as the spear tip.

by NickGreat on Wed, 07/19/2006 - 02:16

Yup, would have been even cooler with a silver helm! (don't have to paint them cos MCNStore has it in silver! Woohoo!)

I really like the spear; looks like it can be fitted together like any lego part. Can it?

Very nice looking Damien, just checked it out in the customs section a little while ago, I love the way you have made the spear, I must repeat Nick's question and ask if it hooks together like other Lego pieces.

I also enjoy the shield, the design looks great, hardly even noticed the smudge (Although if it was my custom I am sure it would drive me nuts ; ) )

The only thing I would suggest to change would be to give him a silver helm, nothing much, but there is really no problems at all with this custom, it's very good and I look forward to the archer and knight.

My B-Shelf (Under Construction)

by Damien on Wed, 07/19/2006 - 17:36

Thanks everybody. I appreciate the kind words.

The Spear: The spear is made in the same fashion as my other longspears. It's an RB javelin tip pinned and glued to an umbrella stand with the power part cut off from the rim. So it can't be taken apart, and it isn't a simple 'click and press' operation. But it's fun, and the spears come out fantastically. The various folders of my Brickshelf gallery show off a bunch of different longspears, by the way.

The Helmet: I actually do have a helmet painted the same silver as the spearpoint (I wouldn't have used a basic MCN-silver because that's actually a completely different colour). When I put the silver helm on the figure, however, I didn't like it. It looked just a bit too gaudy. My vision for this particular fig was of more of a provincial, rurul levy soldier. The silver helmet simply made him look too 'wealthy' and gaudy for that. So using a dark grey helmet, in my opinion, helped him maintain a somewhat humble look to him.

And I do have a helmet around here somewhere with the crest-holder filed off, but something about it just looks too ..  .smooth. Ya know? Seems off.

Printing: Information on how to download, print, and size decals is found in spades all over this website. I won't be rehashing all of that information in this thread. The Decal in JPEG format is currently available in the Minifig Customs section of the site (Fantasy - Middle-earth), and whenever I get around to it I will probably also try to upload the design as a PDF and as a CDR. The PDF and CDR files will, however, probably be clear, so will require the printing services of Red or Kam anyway.

The Other Nummy: He's gone. That, older, picture was taken right after I got the torso decal from Red. At that time I was only trying to show off the decal, rather than a finished figure (hence the reason that the fig was sort of a hodgepodge). I removed that entry and replaced it with this one. But don't fear, a more proper Numenorean Knight will be showing up as soon as possible (and the Archer should be finished today or tomorrow - I'm still messing with his quiver).

In case you're curious, I have a slew of other Middle-earth customs in the pipeline, and in various stages of completion, and uncompletion - while waiting for decals and various parts. Those include, but aren't limited to, Gandalf the Grey with custom staff and Glamdring, Aragorn with custom Anduril, Fingolfin with custom Ringil and shield, Feanor with custom sword, Haldir (mostly finished) with custom shield, and Hador Lorindol.

I know that quite well actually, that's why I added the little detail to face of Ar-Pharazon's helm. Unfortunately that meant I had to add a small decal to keep with the theme. I am going to try and add wings to the side of my Num. helm, maybe you should see how it works with the smoothed Greek helm.

Good to see you don't have a 1A Elf in the works. I'd hate to have us on concurrent projects again ; ) Good luck on those by the way!

I thought about that. My original plan was to have the little lady dremel the design into the side of the helmet. But I think that's a bit grandiose of a plan. The only other option I can think of that would look passable is to make the wings out of thin plastic sheet and glue them to the helmet. It's something I have to think on a little more. But the plan is to do something of the sort with my Nummy knight, and he's far from being finished right now - so I have some time to think about it.

Sure I do - Fingolfin and Feanor. But I doubt we'll be stepping on each other's toes there. I assume your design is going to be more stylistic, whereas mine is going to attempt to be a closer match to what Tolkien probably actually had in mind (which will undoubtedly make mine more boring to look at ;) ).

Although I do have plans to go with a more stylistic approach for some figs. I'm thinking on a more movie/stylistic Knight of Dol Amroth right now, and maybe a movie/stylistic Gil-galad at some point. Lots of projects, not nearly enough time to get to them all anytime soon.

I was recently looking at all your nemeronians, and I loved them and while looking at the lotr weapons and warfire guide i came across the idea that you could paint silver wristgaurts onto them your choice

Yes I know the aforementioned characters are first age, I meant a generic first age Elf warrior. I hope my design will be considered stylistic, I'm on my eighth torso design already! Taking a little bit of license is not a bad idea, but I would never call your customs boring.

Stuff: a few things to consider. . .

1.) My custom here is based more on the book, not the movie (even though it uses a design from the movie). The book you're looking at is based on the films.

2.) This particular custom is supposed to represent a relatively poor warrior - just a spearman. Eventually I will do a knight of Numenor. And I'll spoil the surprise by saying that I plan for him to have both greaves and vambraces.

3.) Painting vambraces onto a fig would be really difficult. You'd never get the level of detail and shape that you would get with a decal.

Phar:

Oh! I got'cha. Yeah, so far I have no plans for a generic Elf. And your stuff is definitely stylin'!  I'm lookin' forward to seeing what you come up with. Eight torsos. . . you've been busy. Between the two of us, we'll fill these boards with a whole bunch of different approaches to visualizing Middle-earth. Man, we are so awesome.

What quiver???  Are you perhaps referring to the OTHER Numenorian custom Damien posted?  If so, please post it in the correct topic (and throw a ? on the end of it for good measure).  If not.... then I must be losing my eyesight 'cause I see no quiver.

Very nice customs!  But who is Danielle?

Stuff: Wrong thread, buddy.

Kunai: Thanks. Danielle is my woman. She's the more artistic of the two of us, and has a big hand in pretty much every custom/decal I've ever posted.

I like the hand painted shield concept, it looks much better than a decal would look for that purpose I think, and I think that he may look good with a cape, as the LotR citadel guard has a spear and a cape, and he looks great with it.

Have you considered making vignettes from them, like battle scenes, they would be cool to see.

by Damien on Sat, 07/22/2006 - 16:38

Yeah, I thought the hand-painted shield would look better than a decal. A little more 'real' - as it were. The citadel guards of Gondor are sort of an elite, decorative group. My fig here is a basic Numenorean soldier. I wanted to keep him as basic as possible. But do look for a cape on one of my upcoming figures -- a Numenorean Royal Guard.

No, I haven't considered doing vignettes. Largely because my piece selection is limited to a few things. Mostly what I have piece-wise is full sets that I don't want to take apart. And a vignette with just two guys on a plate duking it out would be boring. Yet another tragedy caused by the loss of my entire LEGO collection a couple years ago.

However, I may do scenes at some point using the sets that I have. It may be interesting to see Numenoreans defending Knights' Castle Wall against evil men, eh?
