| Paper Scabbardsby Damien (Tips, Techniques & Questions)Making scabbards is something I've wanted to do, but never really got around to doing. Mostly because the particular scale and sizing of minifigs makes it very hard to do a convincing scabbard that won't get in the way of playability (which I think should remain a concern unless you're just doing a showpiece, even if you don't plan to actually play with it). Little Armory, of course, has a scabbard, but it sticks out quite a bit, so is better suited to your mounted troops than footmen. So I endevoured to make a paper scabbard, something that will 'hang' a bit more realistically and not get in the way too much. I largely succeeded, I think. I just took a good solid piece of paper (construction paper) and folded it up around the blade of the sword, then glued it closed along the length and at the end. Following that, I threaded a very thin piece of thread through it. Then, I painted the paper, in this case dark red with chape and locket of bronze to match the sword that was going in it. Almost done -- after that I simply knotted the thread around one of the fig's leg pegs and put the torso back on to secure it. Turned out okay, but not awesome. Hopefully future attempts will be better. In the future I hope to do this to figures wearing designs made on Armothe's tunic template - so I won't have to use thread, I'll just glue the scabbard directly to the tunic, most likely. And yes, the thread I used is a very light colour - I thought a little flamboyancy suited the character. ![]() ![]() ![]() (These pictures look rather large, but they all -ARE- 400 pixels or below to a side.)
