Paper Scabbards

by Damien (Tips, Techniques & Questions)

Making scabbards is something I've wanted to do, but never really got around to doing. Mostly because the particular scale and sizing of minifigs makes it very hard to do a convincing scabbard that won't get in the way of playability (which I think should remain a concern unless you're just doing a showpiece, even if you don't plan to actually play with it). Little Armory, of course, has a scabbard, but it sticks out quite a bit, so is better suited to your mounted troops than footmen.

So I endevoured to make a paper scabbard, something that will 'hang' a bit more realistically and not get in the way too much. I largely succeeded, I think. I just took a good solid piece of paper (construction paper) and folded it up around the blade of the sword, then glued it closed along the length and at the end. Following that, I threaded a very thin piece of thread through it. Then, I painted the paper, in this case dark red with chape and locket of bronze to match the sword that was going in it. Almost done -- after that I simply knotted the thread around one of the fig's leg pegs and put the torso back on to secure it. Turned out okay, but not awesome. Hopefully future attempts will be better.

In the future I hope to do this to figures wearing designs made on Armothe's tunic template - so I won't have to use thread, I'll just glue the scabbard directly to the tunic, most likely. And yes, the thread I used is a very light colour - I thought a little flamboyancy suited the character.

(These pictures look rather large, but they all -ARE- 400 pixels or below to a side.)

oh i swa that on the shelf, it looks so good! oh and i love the decal for redbeard, did you post that somewhere?

by Damien on Sun, 07/02/2006 - 14:09

Thanks guys (well, guy and gal).

No, I didn't post the decal anywhere, because it isn't mine. It's RedBean's "Prince Imrahil" decal (Fantasy - Middle-earth).

Looks great for paper, can't even tell. You should make a template for this so you can print out rich looking engravings to give it more flare.

You know, Damien, I tried something similar to make a pistol holster for my militia warlord, and I failed miserably.  Working with paper on such a small scale is very difficult (at least for me), so your accomplishment is really impressive.  Great job!

Please, call me Chris.

Phar: Thanks. I'd make a template, but it would probably look silly. After all, it's really just a rectangular piece of paper folded around the sword. And since I don't have a scanner, anymore, or a printer - making or printing a template would be a rather difficult thing to do. Haha. But I could always have the little lady paint detail onto it - she's good at that sort of thing. She draws eyebrows on 15mm miniatures, for cryin' out loud.

Chris: Thanks. I think if you had tried to make a sword-scabbard instead of a gun-holster, you'd of fared better. Totally different shapes - blades being much easier. I wouldn't want to try making a pistol holster, as I'm fairly certain I'd end up getting angry and breaking something. The fact that you even tried is saying a lot for your patience and fortitude.

Hey, that's really good Damien, you sure are clever what with all these modifications and ideas ;-)

I can hardly tell it is made from paper, the paint makes it look alot like a plastic piece, I also like the way you painted your cutlass.

Oh yeah, and great pirate by the way, the purple shirt and blue diamond and cutlass handle really makes him stand out from all of the other pirate figures I have seen.

Thanks, Amanda.

The cutlass paintjob was actually a stupid mistake. It's from when I first started getting back into customization, and wanted to paint my sword grips different colours, since in real life swords had all kinds of coloured-leather grips. However, I didn't even think that the slight bit of extra thickness paint added wouldn't ruin it. To be honest, that sword won't even fit into a minifig hand anymore. Haha. But it does -look- nice, doesn't it?  ;)

I'm glad you like the pirate -I'm fond of him as well. I call him "Redbeard Gets A Makeover." It's actually a Redbean Imrahil torso decal. Works really well for a pirate's coat.

Since this turned out rather well, I may make a few more for other swords. Possibly one for a katana, and another for the various LA single-hand swords. Wish me luck.

I was wondering about the extra width of the handle, well like you say, at least it -looks- good.

I will be looking forward to the katana sheath, I think that it would look nice painted the same color as the above sheath with some gold accents, out of curiosity, will you be making it for your modded katana?

The katana scabbard will be fun, I think. I'm not sure what colour-scheme I'll go with, yet. Quite possibly the one above, but I may decide on something different. I only own one real 'samurai' figure, and I think I could pass Scorpion Knights as a sort of pseudo-samurai, if I wanted. So the colour scheme will probably be made ot match one of the two.

I actually have two modded katana.

They have very slightly different blade lengths. And I'm not sure which one will be getting the scabbard yet. But yes, it will definitely be a modded katana. The standard LEGO no-dachi-being-called-a-katana is just too long for a side-slung scabbard. Although I'm considering making a back baldric design for the Little Armory two-hand sword. ;)

If only I knew the metric system I could respect the 15mm paint job. I'm sure it takes talent. I don't know why engravings are so important to me, but if you sprayed the paper with a sealer some custom decals could be fitted. At least for those of us who don't have talented significant others stuck in our back pockets.

15mm is a little more than half an inch Phar. And great job on that sheath and its owner. Your katanas are pretty sweet too. Great job. -Pac
