Paint Jobs, Brimmed Helmet, etc

by Damien (Tips, Techniques & Questions)

Thanks to my new Brickshelf account, I can show off some other things I've done awhile back and didn't post.

First up - katana. I don't like the size of the LEGO katana - it's too big. So I chopped it down.

In Hand

Next up is some modified helmets. One of them is Red's Viking helmet, the other three are LEGO 'flared' helmets. I turned them all into Norman-style helmets. And paint jobs all around.

Full Size

And how about some KK2 stuff all painted up bright?

You know you want to see the full size picture.

Hey, you know what I don't like? The brimmed helmets. The stuff around the head makes it look weird. So I cut it all off and filed it smooth.

And while I posted up my recipe for longspears awhile back, I took a new picture and I really like it, so why don't you take a look?

Great use of RedBean's Javelins. I may have to doctor up some spears like that as well. The brimmed modification looks a lot better as well, and it is a very clean job. The KK stuff looks great as well. Great job over all. Oh and I didn't even reconnize the Flared helms for what they were. That's quality work my friend.

Nice Modifications Damien,

I would have to say that the brimmed helm is my favorite, it just looks so good without all the extra plastic.

I also like the painted KK stuff, I have done that as well : )

I knew there was something I didn't like about the brim helm. Now I'm going to drag out my 60 +/- helms and mod them just like this! Beautiful paint schemes on the helm BTW. I hope those are historically accurate ; )

I like the modded flared helmets the best they look great and the paint jobs are nice.

The kk2 stuff looks awesome, the sword is a great and simple custom, and the brimmed helmets well now they just look like pointy hats, but good though.

Of course they're historically accurate!  ;)

And fair warning, the helmet will look a little weird once you trim it down, because the brim is so wide. It'll stop looking weird after you look at it a few more times. I really wanted to file down the brim some to make it look a bit more like its historical counterparts, but I know there's no way I could keep it symmetrical, or even round.

And thanks, Emily. Glad you like those helmets. I'm pretty fond of them, myself. They were designed for my Norman Knights, who I haven't gotten to finishing yet.

Well, they're not really pointy. . . and actually, they look a lot like the kind of helmet in this picture, or this picture. The major difference being the exaggerated size of it being a LEGO piece.

Another good point about the helmets! I never noticed that before, I might try to narrow the brim using my compass cutter and rice paper tape. That might work as a guide when shaving and sanding. Hmmm.

Interesting idea! I want to see how that works out. If it turns out good, I'll just start sending my helmets to you. ;)

Oisome! [Translation:Awesome, in faux Curly speech] Those are really awesome!! I've never liked the brim hats either, but they look good on Uruk-Hai.. Anyhow, those are way awesome! And did I mention they were awesome?

Not only did it turn out well, but I actually took time on a Friday night to post this.

It actually wasn't that hard. Just removed the parts around the head, used a compass cutter on sticker paper and placed in the center on the bottom. Some simple dremel and sanding and voilà! A more historically accurate brim helm. Now just 28 more to go, helm folder when public here.

Gotta tell ya, Phar, I'm insanely jealous. That helmet looks fantastic. Unfortunately for me, that's out of my league. I can't dremel worth a. . . you know what. But hey, at least you'll finally have some use for those helmets, since you'll have a whole slew of them all purtied up and looking good. Nice work, Phar. Really nice. ~sincerity tinged with jealousy~

You don't have to be jealous, you gave me the idea remember. I forgot to thank you for that, so thanks! I am seriously considering doing this modification for atleast another 14 so all my archers have uniform helms. It should only take a couple of months.

That's why I'm jealous, you see. You did it better.  ;)
I only have three of these helmets anyway, though. But maybe I'll see if the little lady can do something like what you've done. She's pretty good with a dremel.

Forgot to mention this earlier. You came up with the idea, I implemented it. As Leonardo Da Vinci said (something to this effect anyway) Formulating an idea is genius, implementing that idea is servile. Though I wouldn't tell your better half that ; )

I've done a number of similiar efforts with the same stuff.  Cutting down the No Dachi that LEGO calls a Katana into more appropriate Katana and Wakizashi lengths (makes for a better Naginata, too), spectacleless spectacle helmet, painting, etc, but the one thing that I haven't done is change the Kettle helm (well, not counting the radical romanizing I did, but that didn't leave it recognizable as a Kettle hem).

I never removed the camail since I felt that would emphasize one of the things I don't like about it: the brim is too wide.  I always knew the solution was to dremel down the entire brim, but never got a round to it.  So it was quite interesting to see the various concerns, results, and opinions.

I'll have to try it now, but I will include one more (annoyingly long and difficult) step by removing the side-to-side reinforcing/joining strip on the top of the helmet.  I can't find any record of spangenhelm style quartered construction on the helmets crown.  Two hemispheres (or is that demihemispheres?), yes, or even a single whole piece, but not quartered.

Interesting stuff.

Hey TTK, long time no see. I think Phar's dremel job turned out really awesome - and definitely alleviates the concern of the hugantic brim. As for the spangenhelm construction of the brimmed helmet, there is one shown in an Osprey plate from one of the French Medieval books. And another one in one of the Byzantium books. Plus one in a Medieval German book and a Medieval Scandinavia one. I'll have to take some time when I get a chance to look through them at the commentaries and see if they make a claim as to what the designs are based on - as sometimes they're based on museum pieces or pieces in private collections.

Either way, I definitely look forward to seeing a 'smooth' brimmed helmet.
