My 3 Numenoreans

by Pharazon (Minifig MOC's)

These customs represent about a year's worth of work and several very charitable and professional individual's contributions. They are what I envisioned the Numenoreans (the ancestors of the Dunedain in Middle Earth) would have looked like at their pinnacle. Without further ado:

Nimlothian Sentinel~

The highest of the order of guardians in the Kingdom of Numenor. This individual has one soul purpose, the protection of the Nimloth, the white tree given to the Numenoreans by the Elves of Tol Erresea. If his face looks familiar, that's because his lineage will eventually become great men in the realm of Gondor. I really like this guy because he is essentially made of spare parts and various projects.

Numenorean Infantryman~

These soldiers of the kingdom were of such great fighting skill and so menacing, even the Dark Lord Sauron didn't try to withstand them. They traveled to Middle Earth and the evil armies fled before them and before Numenor's downturn, they performed many great feats in many corners of the world including the capture of Sauron. Some of you may recognize some of his armament, his sword is that of falchion style. Appropriately elegant because again, they would have learned much from the Elves, including smithying. His shield is very large and when the army worked in conjunction would have made an impenetrable wall of protection.

Ar-Pharazon~

The last King of Numenor. Never a legitimate ruler, he usurped the thrown and began what was to be known as the Akallebeth (Downfall of Numenor). Under him, his nearly unstoppable armies conquered many realms and captured the Dark Lord and brought him the island nation. At first captive, Sauron eventually gained the trust of Ar-Pharazon and persuaded him to invade the lands west of Numenor (forbidden to Men) under the promise he will capture the secret of immortality. But he was deceived. As soon as Pharazon stepped foot on Aman, his entire fleet of ships were sunk and Numenor was swallowed by the ocean. Many great things were lost due to Ar-Pharazon's actions.

His eyes are twilight gray due to Sauron's persuasion and his armament was inspired by Alan Lee's early sketch-work for the movies. His shield is an updated version of a shield I did a while ago. His mace is very similar to Sauroman's staff in the movies. I gave him very light, almost ceremonial armor to reflect his arrogance that he wouldn't need protection because he is such a grand figure.

Thanks so much to Damien, Redbean, and Kaminoan for your help here. It simply wouldn't have been possible without it. Please checkout the FOLDER when public, not to brag but there is a lot to see.

It's all good, but I like Ar-Pharazon's mace the best. I also particularly like the first two shields and the Numenorean Infantryman's sword.

Sweet, you should make Sauroman's staff It would look so cool.
The spear is a cut up trident, isn't it?
and don't get me wrong, I love the decals, but without the weapons, shields, helms and shoulder armours they wouldn't be the same.
I think my favourite is the infantryman.

Wow,Incredible work Pharazon.

The detail is just amazing,I really like the huge shield, did you make it out of styrene? If so nice job for that as well.

I like Ar Pharazon's custom tunic and neckwear, they seem to look like they are made from plastic but I cannot really be sure.

Definately worth a year of work, these things have Customs Gallery written all over them ; )

Awesome, Phar. Excellent work all around, but the infantryman is definitely my favourite (I say with no hint of bias). While I'm a big opponent of curved swords for the goodly men of Middle-earth, it really all comes together strikingly. Excellent work on the shoulder-harness as well. What did you use to make those pauldrons? I can't imagine that's just shaped styrene.

The NImlothian Sentinel turned out very well also. Really diggin' it.

Good stuff. I've stolen those pictures and squirreled them away on my computer in my "Awesome Stuff" folder.

I'm glad so many of you like the Infantryman, a good deal of work went into him. Even though it's like picking your favorite child I will say that I prefer the Nimlothian Sentinel, for previously stated reasons and Faramir was my favorite character of LoTR.

Crazy~ Actually the long spear is a modified ninja pike head attached to a plastic rod I found in a spare parts box from my model airplane days. My original inclination was to make the shaft cartoonishly long, but conservatism struck me and I scaled it back a bit.

Lamanda~ All ' fabric' elements are just paper with boxing tape over them for now. There's no reason why they wouldn't work with printable fabric, if I had any. Lots of future mod ideas for these guys so certainly replacing the paper with fabric will be one of them.

Damien~ Of course no bias at all! Glad to make it in to your awesome stuff folder. Perhaps speaking of which, I know Tolkien NEVER mentioned curved blades in Middle Earth however I remember seeing a pretty awesome falchion sword in someone's folder over at photobucket and just had to try it. (The Elves teaching of smithing techniques was a pretty good cover-up I thought)

Ah yes, the pauldrons. Perhaps you guys can find your answers here. They're probably my second fav project only to Pharazon's mace. I forgot to thank AMEX for all the spare plastic the provided me. Who knew being 'pre-approved' could be so industrious!?

This is come of the most amazing work I've seen Phar! Your attention to detail is fantastic.

It would be a crime for this not to be in the minifig database! (although it looks like brickshelf is down for the day)

Sentinel is my favorite. Great job on the accessories, the spear and the sword are just great and the shields look very original! The skirts, what are they made of? My only criticism would be that Ar-Pharazon should have been a little darker character, at least according to what I imagine him to be, but nevertheless it's an awesome custom!

Indeed, these go directly to the 'Minifig Customs' section. As always, great job, man, keep customizing! I really wonder what you're planning to do next...

Those are so good!  I love the weapons!

by Pharazon on Sat, 05/20/2006 - 12:21

Thanks for the positive comments guys. Excuse me UA. . . did you say skirts? (Scoffs) They are tunics thank you very much, the nerve! ; ) Right now they are just plain printer paper and I smoothed them over will glossy boxing tape, it was in the interest of expedience I guess. Here's a better picture so you can see that they actually wrap around the body and go under the neck, see tunics.

Fair point about Pharazon, maybe I'll make an 'Invasion of Aman' armor set that's a bit darker looking.

ABSOLUTELY ASTOUNDING!! Were did you get the helmet for the Nimlothian Sentinal?

by Damien on Sat, 05/20/2006 - 19:30

Tolkien does mention curved swords - but only in the hands of baddies (and one specific mention of an Elf using one, somewhere in HoMe). Still, looks cool.

Awesome stuff.

DarkTide: Pharazon made the helmet. He has a thread somewhere around here from when he first designed it.

I should have observed your literary superiority before making such a definitive statement.

UA~ The pages look great, thanks!

When I saw your post on the Numenorean helm and the pauldrons, I sought of saw these coming; and they've exceeded all expectations!

The shileds are done nicely, as expected from the Shield Lord but the (Sauron staff like) mace really rocks, how did you get that done?

No favorites for me cos they all are! Nice work!

Pistachio,

You should really edit your post, there are way too many exclamation points in that sentance.

And  Pharazon,I am a very big fan of that infantyman's shield, you have amazing talent with styrene.

Thanks Nick, Shield Lord huh? Nice ring to it. The mace was my favorite project for these guys. It's actually a composite of a Lego antenna (grip), sculpey (golden ball), cut-up AMEX card (blades), and pieces of an 1/48 scale AIM-9 Sidewinder missile (hilt). I wouldn't want to do it again, too much eye strain, but it was fun to work on.

Excellent work Pharazon (amazing how the infantryman even looks like you!).  Someone over at classic castle posted these creations there and much discussion has ensued.  You may wantt o stop over there and give them some of the explanation you have given to us.
