Modding Minifigs in the LEGO Star Wars videogame

by jp30 (Publishing)

Hi all,

A while ago I (with the help of some others) figured out how to mod the LEGO Star Wars Videogame (PC version only). My particular area of expertise is in reskinning the minifigs. This is the sort of thing I'm talking about;

If anyone's interested in trying it out for themselves, I have written a detailed tutorial which you can find here. The tutorial takes you through step-by-step to convert the Stormtrooper to the TIE-Pilot you see above.

Also, even if you don't alter textures, it will teach you how to extract textures from the game which you can then use to base your own decals off. For example, this is what the game's Jango Fett texture looks like (not much use to most people, as there already exists a real Jango minifig, but there are plenty of in-game textures that aren't presently available on actual minifigs!)

It also describes how to do things like this... (Zam, Jawas, Buzz Droids do not actually appear in the proper game, though their data files are on the CD. Similarly you can fly ARC-170's into the Battle over Coruscant (first pic) and pilot Luke's Landspeeder in the pod race!

And you can also do things like this, but that's not covered in the tutorial;

I will explain how the above was done if anyone gets that far and would like to know how to alter (certain) character's attributes - not just size as pictured, but jump height, speed etc.

Anyway, if any of you are keen to read the tutorial, follow it, and make your own custom characters, I'll be here to provide help, clarifications, feedback, whatever...

that is impressive, extremmely IMPRESSIVE!

who tought you to do that, or did you figure out how to do it?

And does it work with the downloadable demo?

This is Lego Fanatic sending you a message for no reason what so ever...

I have some experience in game modding (self taught) with character models and skins for Dark Forces 2: Jedi Knight, some character skins for Jedi Outcast (here, here, and here), and I'm on the team remaking the original Dark Forces on the Jedi Academy engine.

I found someone online (SparedLife) who had a generic DDS texture ripper / inserter, and figured the rest out on my own.

It does work with the demo too, yes, though it's generally frowned upon to mod demos, but as long as you weren't publically sharing your mods, I don't see any issue.

If anyone gets to the point where they would like to make a mod publically available, PM me, as last I checked http://www.lucasfiles.com hadn't uploaded any LEGO Star Wars game mods. Part of me gaining permission to mod the game was that all mods had to be posted only on that one (LucasArts sanctioned) mod site.

Well, there's no guarantee the tutorial will work on modding the game's sequel, especially if they update the game engine & model format, but it's likely the same techniques will apply. And if it doesn't work, I'm sure I'll come up with an Original Trilogy version of the tutorial soon enough.

LOL, I seem to get that a lot around here!

Yes, all is explained in my earlier posts. This is for PC only, and part of the deal with the developers / publishers granting permission to mod the game to me, was that all mods be posted only to lucasfiles.com

Oh, and I'm already receiving requests for character changes via PM. The whole idea of me making a step-by-step tutorial is so you can make your own mods,

I do realise it will be beyond the scope of some people, as it does get a little complicated at times. But I'm not interested in taking requests at this time, sorry. However I will help you learn to do it yourself if you have trouble with the tutorial, just use this thread to ask me questions and I will try and assist.

Maybe if somone else here learns to mod the game using by techniques, they will take requests?

But until then, you're going to have to try and do it for yourselves...

hmmm, jp30 i've been trying this out again and it works, so i might start taking requests, soon not now, i will tell you when i'm ready thanks

Obliviumjr also jp30 i think i can make a PC program that can help you do this, you know a small program that opens the DDS files and you can edit them from there??? what do you think

I have a program that opens DDS files, and in which I can edit them, Paint Shop Pro (Photoshop also works). If you would like to write your own image editing software, that is wonderful, but I think I will stick with Paint Shop Pro myself.

If you are a whizz programmer, what I need is a simple mod installer / uninstaller that will allow someone to, say, replace the stormtrooper HGP file with the TIE Pilot one, also swap the icon...

... and then revert back to Stormtrooper once you're finished with the mod. Are you familiar with the Jedi Knight / Mysteries of the Sith games? They had such a utility called "Patch Commander" - basically a mod-manager. At present installing / unisnstalling mods is messy (manually backing up files, overwriting files with one's modded ones, then manually copying the original file back when finished).

In some circumstances, yes. There are some limitations to what you can do... and don't get 'skins' confused with 'models'. All the limitations and work-arounds are explained in the tutorial.

Check sections 5 and 6 in particular on this page.

OK, I will write up a detailed explaination of what it needs to do later today. :-)

Thanks.

What's your background / experience, by the way?

Edit: It won't be "later today", but it will be in the next few days.

Cool. Just found it a funny question to be asking given the screenshots in my opening post, thought you may have had some of the terms confused - believe me I've encountered it many times before...

Welcome to the forums jp! It's always nice to see somebody from another forum I visit. :)
And I wasn't quit sure what to do with this thread; since it's neither really minifigs, or questions; so I moved it to 'Brick Talk'.

by kunaiblade on Sat, 04/15/2006 - 16:40
can you use it on different videogames?

I asked Recluce where to put it before starting it, and she said either Brick Talk or Tips. I figured it worked better in Tips as, well, I'm teaching people how to modify minifigs in a new way (albeit virtual ones), but whatever works I guess (though personally, I thought it fitted better where it was)...

The basic technique can work on other games that use DDR textures, yes. It looks like sparedlife.com is currently down, but the technique and the DDS extractor and inserter works on other games such as No One Lives Forever 2, plus quite a few others I can't recall off the top of my head.

Well, if you're not familiar with copying-pasting-renaming files, making directories etc, nor familiar with using graphics programs, it is daunting. But if you have a basic knowledge of such things, the tutorial should get you there in the end.

But basically the whole thing boils down to this.

1. Find a character
2. Extract its texture
3. Edit the texture
4. Insert the edited texture back into the character file
5. Back up the original character
6. Replace original character with your modified version.

So while it may read quite complicated the first time, after you've made a couple of new skins you'll find the whole process very simple indeed!

But yeah, I'm a genius... ;-)

You may be a genius, But I am Invincible

It's luke from the new game, in the old one

in a metaphorical sense I am jesus and jp3o is god, now who can tell me what that means?
and by the way the next mods I make will be obi-wan Clone Wars maybe an arc trooper and my custom mandalorion as can be seen here

That you have delusions of grandeur and can't spell my name correctly?

Once obliviumjr and I get the mod managment utility sorted (so any old person can install and uninstall other's skins with no hassles), I'll re-approach LucasFiles.com for a LEGO Star Wars section, then we can all submit these lovely mods.

Good day, brothers!

Where jp-30 might be the skinning junkie for Lego SW, I am it's coder!
I already made 3 mods, 2 of which completely change a level, and 1 that changes level names, character names and intro texts.

I already uploaded 2 mods, but I had to put 'em down because the developer didn't want us to put 'em up on the internet, and no matter how many times I've contacted Lucasfiles or send 'em files, they never responded or anything :(.

Here are some pics of the mods I've made :

Duel Of The Fates (Darth Maul overhaul)

Enjoy, I hope this will be a new beginning for Lego SW Modding!

Manga, checkin' out!

EDIT : Jp, I just read your most excellent skinning tutorial, if you want, or if enough people want it, I might write a programming tutorial about the code, I'll see if I can get people enthousiastic first! :P
