A Lot of WIPs (New Jedi Fig, a Vibrosword, SW Helmets and a New Robe) by UA

by Unknown Artist (WIP, Decal & Customizing Chat)

My Friends and Fellow Customizers!

This week, I had a little break from my studies – I had only one exam which I managed to miss ;) – this means that I have a lot of new WIPs to share with you!

First of all comes my new WIP Jedi Knight with no name yet (any suggestions welcomed). This one got a custom hairpiece originally intended for an Agent Smith custom (yeah, that’s right, no Matrix customs for me in the near future) and an experimental dark grey hooded cloak. I’m planning to make some grey Jedi robe decals to go with an old light gray torso for this fig. Some boots will also be included. I edited Bertramtalespinner’s ‘Veers’ face decal for this custom. Currently, the guy is wearing the Dark Jedi Robes you might remember from my ‘Fallen Jedi’ fig.

Next, is my new experiment, an exotic-looking cloak - I still don’t know how to use this one. Again, any ideas are welcomed. For more pics, click HERE.

What you see on the photo above is the finished prototype for my KotOR II vibrosword that I mentioned in some of my earlier posts. As you have noticed, it is made in lightsaber scale and can be easily held by a minifig (for more pics, click HERE). It is now being molded – the silicone has only 3 hours left to dry – after that, I’ll pour in some plastic into the mold and see how it turns out…
I believe I ought to say a few more things about my new way of customization – molding. Robert’s tutorial and Emily’s excellent creations inspired me to order a bunch of different casting polymers from Germany. Since the shipping price was terribly high, I had to order LOTS of KauPo products to make up for it, so now I’ve got enough molding/casting supplies to hold out for another century ;). Without wasting any time, I started practicing and tried to mold an Eps II Clone Helmet. I made some mistakes during the molding process – like spilling half of my release agent on the floor, which certainly moved me dangerously close to the dark side ;) – so the results were not too good. I decided to cast an easier shape like a Stormtrooper helmet. As you can see in the photo, the results are not flawless, but satisfactory. I have a lot more pictures, but I had no time to crop and upload them, so please bear with me. ;) Currently, I’m following Recluce’s path and molding an Eps III Clone Helmet.

The whole WIP Gallery can be found here: http://www.brickshelf.com/cgi-bin/gallery.cgi?f=138637

Any suggestions (especially those regarding the new robe and the Grey Jedi), comments, criticism and questions are, as always, appreciated and welcomed…

One and a half hour left till the demold time of the Vibrosword, Unknown Artist out.

Cool, I like it all, and isn't hard to cast something as small as a vibrosword?
and when you do cast them, will they be for sale?

Nice work! I like the new colour, but I don't really think the hair piece suits him, unless he was an older jedi, so then I think it should be or have some dark grey in it. Great job as always though!

I am Super Jawa, the new Sith Lord!  Bow down to me ye foolish mortals and prepare to taste the Dark Side!

Hmm..... If the Exotic cloack were in a different, vibrant color, it'd be good for an alternate for Epi. I-III Palpatine. That, or some kind of Diplomat  guy/gal. Anyway, personally  I think the Jedi cloak looks the best of all of your Jedi cloaks.  To me, it looks the closest in style, form and function.  (What?) But I absolutely LOVE your new stuff UA - Its wonderful to look at.
Keep on molding - you're moving up in the ranks to be just like Red and Recluce! (And others!)

I have plenty of common sense....
I just, well, choose to ignore it.

Greyunin, Jark, Danral, Darth Vileus... and like Crazy Boy said, will the Vibrosword/blade be sold? I'd buy!

Sweet man, your figs are gonna have more outerwear than me soon. If your looking for a suggestion for that X-cloak, you should try to make the large flap on the back a large hood. Then it would look exactly like a medieval cloak, sorry I couldn't find a good reference pic. I think this question has already been asked but when you mold the sword are you going to sell them? That grip looks exactly like something I attempted (only way better) for a falchion sword I'm making for my Numenorean. Once again excellent work!

Thanks for your comments, guys! Sorry for not posting an update sooner – I was busy casting the vibroblades. Right now, I’ve got 2 unaltered, 2 ruined by my knife, 1 broken, 1 with bubbles and 1 still not demolded – a total of 7 vibroblades. I haven’t taken any pictures yet, but I’ll try to take some tomorrow.

I guess I got lucky with the mould – the results are much better than I expected, though these are not even near the final look I’d like to have. After casting about 5 more blades, I will work on perfecting them and once I get the look I want, I’ll do another mold – I’ve got a lot of work ahead of me, so wish me luck. ;) Now, to your questions:

MRBee: Well, I decided it would be nice to add a not-so-classic color to my collection of cloaks. ;) Glad you liked it!

Crazy Boy: It actually was a challenge, yes, but eventually I got the level of detail I wanted. Yes, I might sell some if I manage to get a near-TLC or LA quality. Right now, I am planning to make two kinds of blades for sale – the fully painted (with chrome, gold and black) and the primed but not painted versions. Let’s see how it turns out.

Shadowviking: Wow! You got a SW name generator? ;) Those are some cool names (Mal vog Drakken is my favourite so far), but please keep thinking… Just post here or pm me if you find anything cool. Thanks! In my post I described 4 of my new WIP projects and I provided 4 pictures to let the people know what I was talking about. My mistake – I should have written which one is which ;). The second picture in the first row features the ‘Exotic’ cloak.

VM: Thanks! Well, I did intend this one to be a more experienced (and older) Jedi, a former Jedi Master and a member of the Jedi Council who turned away from their teachings, because of the Council’s failure to oppose the Sith in the Exar Kun Wars. Though he would never accept the heritage of the Sith and turn to the Dark Side, he feels that he cannot trust the Jedi anymore. To show that his allegiance lies to the neither of rival groups, he chooses an untraditional dressing like a gray Jedi robe. He is a lone fighter, an unknown hero.

Actually, it was pretty hard to find a face decal that would suit this hairpiece. I considered adding some grayness to it, but since it’s not what TLC usually does, I decided not to.

JG: You know, I had a sketch of the vibrosword ever since I first played KotOR, but somehow didn’t have time to make it until now.

Super Jawa: Thanks! Maybe next time I’m making a Sith Lord I can make a Super Jawa, huh? ;)

Luke: Yes! That’s a great idea to use the cloak for a diplomat minifig! Thanks, man! You know, the Jedi Cloak isn’t very different from my other designs: I just shortened the sleeves a bit and made them a little wider than usual – that’s all.

Tom: I did not design the helmets; I merely molded and then cast them. The clone helms are pretty bad, but the stormie helm I find satisfactory. I am afraid I will not sell any helmets, because it’s Emily’s area and I would not like to interfere. Let’s just say that these were made for the sake of molding practice and for private use. ;)

GB: I wish I, too, ‘liked everything there’… :D

Phar: That’s a great idea. I was looking for an opportunity to make a medieval custom. ;) If I understand correctly, the hood should be considerably bigger than a minifig’s head. Btw, there’s no big flap on the back, this is how it looks from the back:

http://www.brickshelf.com/cgi-bin/gallery.cgi?i=1701485

If you find a reference pic, please forward it to me. If I start selling those vibroblades, do feel free to chop off the handle and use it for your Numenorean swords. ;)

LF: using the cloak as a samurai robe is a great idea, thanks! Wow… Samurai with vibroblades… that must be a sight! :)

DD: Thanks for your kind words! I would have given a more detailed preview, but I love making surprises! I’ll try molding the hairpiece once I’m done with the V-Bs. You reminding me that advert gives me a little idea for my 30.000 Hit Celebration Fig (though I’m still at 27.000, I’d better start thinking what to do next). ;)

Everyone, thanks very much for all of your comments, I appreciate your feedback greatly. I will keep you updated on the V-B project. UA out.

I have finished casting the vibroswords, and started sanding them down to get a more smooth and lego-ish look. Though I made more than 15 casts, only a few turned out the way I wanted. I have sanded one of them's blade section (though I still have to work on the grip), hope you like how it turned out:

I really have no idea what to do to improve the look of the grip, I will try some careful sanding, but not sure it'll work - any suggestions are welcomed. ;)

its ok but i think that the bit above the handle should be a bit shorter and the blade a bit wider . but other than that it is still a good custom well done :D cant wait to see your site and all the amazing things you will have.

Good job on the casting UA!  As you can see it is a bit harder casting the small thin stuff like weapons.  Hence the reason I simply do not do it at all.  But your blades look pretty darn good.  Very legoish looking, and not at all too big for a minifig.  Keep up the good work!

Proven yourself once again UA! Great works!

Did you make the custom hairpiece from scratch or is it a mod from exiting ones? I really like that; it's common enough to use for so many characters!

I haven't played KOTR, so I haven't heard of the vibrosword. It looks pretty hard to cast tho. Like Recluce mentioned, I bet it's difficult to cast something that small and refined. But I must say, good job for even attempting it!

What thickness of sheet styrene did you use for the original? I'm using 0.010 (inches), and it's extremely floppy. I tried laminating another piece on top, but I couldn't cut it exactly the same shape and it looked terrible.

The casts are amazing. I wish I could find some silicone molding compound.

Thanks, everyone! At the moment, I am making another mold of the sanded vibrosword, so you’ll soon see an improved version. I am going to try a different molding technique for this one, so we’ll see how it turns out. After perfecting the design I will make one last mold of it and, if I am satisfied with the result, the casts are going to be for sale. Now, let me answer your questions:

Thor110: Thanks very much for the constructive criticism. What you say about the proportions is true, however to make the V-S suitable for a minifig, I had to obey certain rules set by the TLC, like the dimensions of a minifig hand and the forearm. For example, had the V-S been in the proper scale and proportion, the handle would have been about 1.5 mm – not at all usable by a minifig. I made the original concept having in mind the dimensions of a classical sword and a lightsaber. The hand protection, in fact, should have been a little shorter and the blade a little thinner, but the former would look silly compared to the thick (3mm) handle and latter would have been too fragile looking. Here’s a picture I’ve found on the Internet, though it’s not the one I used as a reference (in fact, it’s a slightly different design, used in KotOR I), but it should give you a general idea about the proportions of the original design:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Vibroblade.jpg

DD: In fact, I was planning to make two different coloring options one a ‘Sith Tremor Sword’ in dark grey, chrome and black and a classical ‘Vibrosword’ version painted gold, black and chrome. I’m also planning to make some decals to highlight the details. I really do not think that TLC’s classical ‘one color’ approach suits the melee weapons, which are made from very different materials in real life. However, one color accessories are much easier to makes since no painting is required.

Rec: Yeah, these were pretty hard to cast – I have thought of an easier way to mold them, so I’ll try it today. If it turns out as I expect it to, I may be able to reach an injection-mold quality in my casts. Thanks for the compliments! ;)

Unit 186: Thanks, but believe me, there’s nothing really ‘incredible’ here, just a few carefully made customs. ;)

Oblivium: “I definitely need some of those vibroblades...” is exactly what I thought when I first played the game. It’s my second favorite weapon in the whole series, but nothing can replace my all time favorite weapon combination, two silver-bladed lightsabers – one in each hand!

GB & LF: Thanks, guys! It’s great to see that your customs positively affect others’ mentality… ;)

JG: Thank you. Once the UAS is online, everyone will have a chance to arm their minifigs with some custom vibroswords…

Nick: Thanks! Yep, I made that hairpiece entirely from fimo, no modifications involved here. The official ones are just TOO thick. It’s pretty universal, on that I agree with you, however it doesn’t suit most official faces – decal is a must. No! I can’t believe that you missed those awesome RPGs! It’s not too late, though, go to the nearest CD Shop and buy yourself a copy – believe me, it’s worth every cent it costs! ;)

DC: See Thor110. ;)

Kam: Currently I have filled the first part of the molding silicone which will dry in 5 hours, so I’ll be able to cast some improved swords tomorrow. After I get a satisfactory quality of detail, I’ll make another cast, so in a week I should move on to painting, and maybe decaling.

Lord Mikal: I didn’t manage to find any styrene in Turkey. ;) Meaning, I only used cut-down official Lego and Megablock pieces together with some modeling paper…
