Numenorean Helms

by Pharazon (Minifig MOC's)

I guess I went a little battle helm crazy lately. The first is Ar-Pharazon's battle helm, very similar to the Gondorian helms in the movies. It is also, to my surprise, very similar to E of Alshire's over at CC.com. I did contact him and he gave me his blessing to post it.

Below would be the Numenorean infantry helm. I hope RB doesn't mind me slicing up his creations. I enlisted Micbean to model it, he's also holding the Numenorean long spear. both ideas have been discussed here before I believe.

This folder link is the same as the one in my Knight's helm thread but it has more pictures of these customs too. As always comments welcome.

That is a sexy helm.  The top looks. . far more pointy than the standard LEGO nasal helm. Is that just my imagination?

My only complaint would be that the lower portion doesn't come down far enough. I'd like to see it reach a little closer to the shoulders.

I like the Greek Helm without the crest-holder. I've been meaning to scrape one of 'em off, but never had the time or inclination to really get it done. It looks good.

Wow they rock! For the first one did you make it out of scratch or did you mod a lego one?

Thanks guys, Viking- the first one is a composite of a smoothed bullet helmet top and a Greek style helm bottom all super glued together.

Damien- Yes the helmet is rather pointy, quite by accident but that is also an attractive feature to me too. It would come down farther, but I broke it and in the process of fixing it I sanded the two pieces a little short but it looks ok with the tunic I made for my Ar-Pharazon fig.

I like the pointiness of it. I think it looks awesome that way. You should send it over to Recluce and have her cast it for you. ;)
I do like how you fixed the two halves together - it's completely seamless, which is an impressive feat.

Sweet Pharazon!  Soo...... you want me to mold it for you?  Huh huh, do ya?

I'm on a Troll hunt.  So, if you're a Troll, look out, cause I'm coming for you!  If you have an alternate account and need it removed, PM me and save me the trouble of hunting you down.  Let the Culling Continue!

Eerrr, it's not completely seamless. Like I said I broke it just when I had it finished and when I got it back together, even with putty there is a rather definite seam going about 1/4 the way round off the right eyelet.

Hmm. . . mold it huh? There are a few spots on it where I'm not totally comfortable with it. It's not as perfect as say one of Redbean's creations. I won't rule it out though, maybe I can fix a few things and we'll see.

Greenstuff, dude. That crap can fix anything (at least, anything that duct tape seems inappropriate for).

My brother once put half an automobile back together with duct tape so I wouldn't knock. ; )

This Green Stuff elixer you guys mention, does it fill scratches, remove paint, make a good breakfast? I'm intrigued, what does it do?

Bart- If you mean the first helm, if you scroll up a bit, I explain the ingredients behind the helm.

Well, no it doesn't remove paint, but if something cracks you can just put some of it in then scrape it off to make a smooth surface, but I'd recommend soaking it first otherwise it's a bugger to get off if you've done something wrong.

And if you like toxic green products (namely broccali) then eat away!

Well, I will tell you.

Greenstuff is a sculpey-like product manufactured by Citadel Games/Games-Workshop. It's an ultra-smooth sculpting compound that dries hard but durable. It's mostly used for sculpting or customizing wargaming miniatures. What you do is roll the -tiniest- amount and spread it into the seam until it's even with the rest of the helmet. Give it 24 hours to dry completely (it'll look dry much sooner, but trapped moisture underneath it can ruin it in the long-run) and then paint over it. Ta-da, a seamless helmet that's just as sturdy as it was before.

Ah ha, does it sand well?

~MCN Moderator of the Minifig MOCs Forum~
by Damien on Thu, 02/16/2006 - 18:12

Of course. It's designed to be filed down into whatever shape you need. The stuff is perfect for this sort of thing. And inexpensive for a really impressive supply. Five dollars and for what you're using it for - it would last like.. years.

Ha! My Photobucket is working now. You can now see a 2nd Age Gondorian Captain mini. The entire sword-arm is sculpted from Greenstuff.

Great job Pharazon! I'm still stumped by what you used for the bottom half of the numenorean helm. Any pics?

Unless I'm severely mistaken, the bottom half is simply a Scorpion Knight helmet from KK2.

It was nice, but unnecessary to ask E of Alshire for any kind of permission, since he took his helmet directly from mine. But I give my blessing, too. :-) I like the single-piece smooth look of the helmet. Very slick. Taking the crest-box off the greek helmet is quite appropriate - saves me the trouble of doing it myself to see how it would look. Nice work.

by MR.Bee on Fri, 02/17/2006 - 01:37
I got a question, how did you make it so smooth? all the bumps and ridges are gone?

by Pharazon on Fri, 02/17/2006 - 01:50

Hooza Badooza!!! TTK I had no idea you had this idea too/first. Thank you much for your blessing.

Nick- As Damien pointed out, the bottom half comes from the helmet he mentioned. Just now realized I referred to it earlier as a Greek style helm. No Idea where I got that!

MRBee- It was the combination of a dremel, sand paper and a lot of eye strain.

Damien- Where can I pick up this magic elixir you call Green Stuff? Did you make that uber cool Gondorian yourself, or just the arm?

~MCN Moderator of the Minifig MOCs Forum~
by Damien on Fri, 02/17/2006 - 02:39

The Gondorian wasn't made by me at all. It was a stock plastic Games Workshop Gondorian miniature from the Last Alliance boxed set. The converting was done by Danielle. You can see what the original figures looked like here.

You can get Greenstuff at most decent Hobby Stores, or at Games Workshop, either their website or their actual store locations.

Just FYI, it might also be called Squadron Green, that's what my hobby shop has.  Its the same stuff.

Just for the sake of reference: This is Greenstuff. The only Greenstuff. Anything else is an imitation and I can't vouch for how similar an imitation may be or work. For best results, I suggest getting the real stuff.

I don't know. Let's see what I had to say about that very question only a few posts ago:

Doh!! I knew I should have bought Squadron Green. I was foolish enough to buy Squadron White and was not impressed.

Hey calling Damien names doesn't deter, Aragorn already tried that as some might remember. Excellent job Damien, to your g/f with the sculpting!
