Custom Episode II Clone Trooper

by Unknown Artist (Minifig MOC's)

Hello, my fellow Customizers!

Today, I would like to share with you a new custom of mine, an Episode 2 Clone Trooper, based on the material given in Episode II AOTC: The Visual Dictionary. This particular custom is more than just another minifig for me: it is my first custom to use water-slide decals and the first custom to be designed completely in Adobe Illustrator.

It took me 5 days to design and completely finish the minifig. The hardest part was to make realistic-looking leg decals (it took me 5 hours to get proportions right the way I wanted, but I'm more or less satisfied with the result). The design in general turned out pretty accurate, I tried not to miss a single line, but in case you notice that I have, please let me know.

So, here comes my latest custom, Episode II Clone Trooper:

Dude!  Awesome looking decals!  They are very clean, you should be proud of those.  At first, I thought they had been photoshopped onto the fig.  Your design is very conscious of detail, and the lines are clean, crisp, and perfect!  I'd love to see some color variations out of this.

Great work.

Wow! Awesome Clone Trooper!

I was thinking a while ago the when the new Storm Trooper came out that it would be cool if there was a Clone Trooper with that much detail.

You did an awesome job! Keep up the good work!

Wow! He's nice! I love the way your decals went on, when I did mine they went all wrong, so I'll follow Red's instructions instead of the one's on the sheet it came with.

By the way, does adobe illistrator cost much?

Everyone, thanks for your nice comments! I really appreciate it! ;) Shurtugal: The round feet were the easiest part of the leg decals! Making those knee plates was much harder! :) Recluce: What you see here is the magic of inkjet, no Photoshop on this one. ;) Once I decide how I can seal the decals (any suggestions?) I'll try making some comic book ARC Troopers. Armothe: I have used a lot of drawing programs (from MS Paint to Adobe Photoshop and Corel Paintshop) and I must say, Illustrator IS the best program of them all! Lt. A.J.V.: Actually, the Stormtrooper you're talking about is also pretty inacurate, and a highly-detailed, movie accurate stormtrooper fig is on my things-to-do list. VM: Red Bean's tutorial was very useful, indeed. Adobe Illustrator CS II costs about 500$. One of the reasons why I still use CS I...

That looks great I like the way how you did the decals for the belt and are you planning on making arm decals?

Sealing the decals is easy. Clear nail polish. Flat out the best stuff you can use. I put on two thin coats of clear nail polish and then reduce 'shininess' by applying a thin coat of "Dullcote"  -- a Testor's painting product that you can find in most good hobby stores. Follow that procedure and you'll be able to scratch the design with your fingernail without worrying about it coming off.

Really great work, though. I, like crazy boy, would like to see some arm decals though, since the arms look a bit bare by comparison to the rest of the figure.

Excellent job!

Nail polish huh? Oh great that means I can just use my mums!(even though she never wears the stuff). But Damien, do you still put a coat of varnish on?

Back on topic, I, like crazy boy, like Damien would also love to see some arm decals, then I just ask for a clone gunship for my birthday and voila! I have some kikass clones and then show my friends and give UA all the credit!

Thanks, Damien! I'll try sealing the decals with some nail polish. Actually, I'd prefer some real 3D armor to arm decals. I'm working on the shoulder plates at the moment. However, if they don't turn out the way I want, I guess I'll have to make some arm decals for you, guys... ;) VM, I think Damien DOES use varnish to seal the ink first (before putting the decals in water) and then uses fingernail polish - after sticking the decals to the torso - to seal the decal.

Victor's correct. You -have- to varnish the decals before applying them or the ink will run. The (CLEAR) nail varnish/polish is applied once the decal is on the figure and protects it from being removed or damaged. In all fairness, it's not my idea -- it was Red's idea. The only difference is that I use two coats and then apply Testor's Dullcote while Red, I believe, only uses one coat of nail polish.

Victor-

FANTASTIC detail....it looks great.  Perhaps Kaminoan could drop it into Illustrator for you?

I have to second babyjawa's requst.....any chance we'll get to use your design for our own armies?

 Great work!

BTW, I actually like the acrylic based clear gloss that Kaminoan recommends for finishing figures...

Nice work, UA. Two suggestions. First, the most obviouse, arm decals. Second (If it is even worth the work), make a tiny little white rectangle to put on his hands to represent that little square of armor on their hands. Once again, very nice!

LG1: Thanks for your compliments & suggestions, but I already have the decal in the Illustrator format - that's where I designed it! ;)

DD, thanks for further advertising the UAS, as you said, the decals will be available both as .PDF files and as print-outs.

Muiredach: Well, I have finished one of the sections of the armor and will post some pics ASAP.
